Guest phil8715 Posted April 10, 2011 Report Posted April 10, 2011 I have bought a Vega and don't understand the difference between the the official 1.09 firmware upgrade supplied by Advent and the Modaco r8 rom. Do I need both installed or is it one or the other? Is it like an Android phone where you root the device and put on a custom rom? I am not new to flashing custom roms on android devices. Just a little confused.

Its not a custom rom like you've been flashing on previous android devices, the r8 is an addon pack which goes on top of the official firmware from Advent, you follow all the instructions just like they are (with 1.09 installed) and you will have modaco r8 +1.09 installed Edited April 11, 2011 by Shaizer

So if I have the R8 rom installed does this mean the Advent 1.09 is also installed?
Guest Lennyuk Posted April 11, 2011 Report Posted April 11, 2011 Modaco R8 is a full rom!!! its not an ad-on pack like the previous versions were, so it doesn't matter what you have as a base rom

MCR r8 is a FULL ROM and will overwrite any previous ROM/Firmware installed on the device - you cannot have MCR r8+1.09 - as with the previous issues of the Modaco Add-on. Hope that clears things up. :)

If not I'll have to make my netbook a dual boot computer with XP and Windows 7. Edited April 11, 2011 by phil8715
Guest wipeout140 Posted April 11, 2011 Report Posted April 11, 2011 Its best to stay with modaco r8 as that allows install of Google applications compared to limited stock applications provided by advent. Also once your ready you could look at other ROM like cyanogenmod, but if your happy with Paul's rom stay with it, as its a very good starting ROM
Guest MonkeyBoy451 Posted April 11, 2011 Report Posted April 11, 2011 hehe I was a few minutes ahead of you there :) Yeah I was typing a reply and got sidetracked, then saw your same reply after I hit the post button. :)

At the end of the day, when it comes to applying r8, you're under no obligations to push the entire update; and so, presumably, making it a "partial rom" if certain files are excluded? I guess at the end of the day, it comes down to; are all of the benificial changes of r8 "overwritten" by more benificial changes in 1.09 (or vice versa)? If this is not the case, then surely you could end up with a hybrid rom containing beneficial changes from both? (this ofc assumes that each update is not dependent on files that you would overwrite from the other update) Thanks, Zeb
