Guest Big Ron - No Longer a Mem Posted February 12, 2003 Report Posted February 12, 2003 Back when the SPV was first reviewed, Guy Kewney (whose opinions I have long respected - he's one of the UK's oldest established and best connected IT journalists) mentioned in his PCW column an Israeli company called IXI; (he also gave the SPV a guardedly supportive review, AND IIRC, wrote ZDNET's review of the SPV.) Not sure why, but I just emembered that, and visited www.ixi.com to see what he was talking about. What I found was "a different approach to the smartphone concept". A modular unit, not an "all-in-one, one-size-fits-all" solution. Given the existence of a "wish list" section of the Modaco forum, this might seem a sensible way forward. If you WANT the extra functions/features... buy them as plug-in extras. It seems to have worked for the desktop PC....! Any thoughts?
Guest Hax Posted February 12, 2003 Report Posted February 12, 2003 Most people want all the function in one easy to carry device - well, at least that's my reason for replacing my nearly new 8310! There'd have been no way that I would have carried both a mobile and a PDA around with me, and the XDA equivalents were just too big. So, the SPV is (as I see it) the first step towards getting an all-in-one mobile/pda that is reasonably compatible with the PC and has the ability of running other apps too (although Orange are doing their best to kill that part :) So, as for having a modular system, I'd have to say that I'd rather not. As it is, I find that with the camera not being incorporated into the design of the phone, it generally just gets left, unused, in a drawer. Had it been built into the phone (which goes nearly everywhere with me) then I would have a lot more value out of it as I would have at just the point when you think to yourself "if only I had a camera to take of picture of that....." This nearly swayed me towards the 7650 - but that was just a tad too BIG! Anyway, just my thoughts! Adam
