If you're perfectly happy with the phone as it is now then there's no real reason to upgrade.

Upgrading will give you more options and things to play with, and may increase battery life but you will lose the FM radio if upgrading to CM7 and have to reinstall everything.

Cheers guys.

I have tried some of the different roms but didn't see anything to get excited about and so restored.

If you're still on JJ RLS3b, you'll be using the old kernel without backlit lights. This might interest you.

Matthew, is there a way I can update without losing my setup i.e. without having to reinstall everything from scratch.

Not really. Going to the latest JJ release needs a wipe. Going to other roms also.

But Titanium Backup can help you a lot.

Unfortunately, not really, or at all. It's such a pain :) I recently changed from a long time FLB-Froyo-G2 user to the new Cyanogen Gingerbread stuff and it took a while.

Only thing I can recommend is a pen and paper, backing up contacts to your SD card, and ONLY USE TITANIUM BACKUP FOR APPS FROM THE MARKET, not texts or anything like that.

If you are using a non-stock launcher you can usually back-up home screens to the SD card.. I know launcher pro and go launcher let you!

I have found this works better than the titanium backup of a launcher!

I'm pretty sure you could just flash the boot.img from the latest jj or posssibly even Gen 1 Swedish Spring.

He may not be wanting to just update the kernel, he may wish to update the entire software. Please don't make such sweeping judgements.

Chill Chief, he said that he tried other ones and didn't see what the fuss was about. You said he would still be on the old kernel, he asked if there was an easy way to upgrade, you said no...

I said yes.

You need to relax...

Thank you for all the helpful feedback.

I put the new CM7 on last night and then ran a restore. I'll have to make a note of the apps I run before using CM7 for real.

My memory is so awful when doing this I use the 'shoot me' app to take screenshots of my menu and desktop so I can put back everything I lost changing rom.

Just a thought. :)

Add the Appbrain application, create an account if necessary.

Allow your phone to sync your currently installed apps from JJ to appbrain.

Install CM7, install Appbrain and let it create a sync for CM7.

log into Appbrains website and manually copy the apps from your JJ phone profile to the CM7 phone profile.

Launch Appbrain on CM7 again and revel in its syncing goodness.

You can also use something like SMSbackup+ to backup your texts and call logs, then restore them to CM7.

Settings for things like WIFI are probably best to manually recreate in order to avoid the headaches they can usually cause.

Sit back and grin to yourself.

job done

For SMS and call logs, I like "SMS Backup & Restore" and "Call Logs Backup & Restore". They're both free from the market. The latter doesn't work with the ZTE dialer though.

I think I read a post on here about appbrain being incompatible either with CM7 or the Blade?

It's compatible with the blade, don't know about CM7 though.

Okay then, I've put CM7 on after installing and sync-ing my JJ apps using appbrain.

With CM7 on everything is now being synced to the phone via appbrain.

Not sure about the lines across the screen - live wallpaper? Cant seem to use anything but the CM7 wallpapers Now Sorted

I also prefer the battery app that tells you how long it has left - a small green bar is not sufficient - Ran one of Frankish's themes - Now sorted

I must say I like it. :)

Sometimes get a bug when typing an sms in that text is not shown as you type?

I think that may be one of the old bugs in CM7 cropping up again in the 'stable' version.

You can read about it in the current CM7 thread.

Appbrain works fine on CM7 on the Blade.

Gone back to JJ

Stuff stopped working i.e. News & Weather app would only show weather despite initally all working. Hate the close down on charge. Other things just not right.

:)
