I thought that moving the cache to SD actually slowed things down?

OK it might give extra space but not really a performance tweek

You sound like your coming from the same sort of expertise level I had as well so I'd say:

If your not ready to change your ROM yet (although i would say definitely get round to it eventually), get rid of all the orange apps, and unwanted apps on the stock ROM using Titanium Backup. (Must be rooted first)

Use a great new app called "SD Increase", this will help to improve read/write speeds for the SD Card.

Depending on how hard you get through battery life already, overclocking is safe anywhere under and including 710MHZ.

I know there pretty, but try to avoid live wallpapers, they eat into battery and slow down home screen usage.

Now controversially: use task killer regularly, kill as many apps you don't need running as possible and as often as possible. I know many people will get angry at this and bring a whole bunch of facts that say you shouldn't do this...... blah blah. All I know is that when i kill most apps that show up in Task Killer, Angry Birds runs so much smoother, FACT.

Hope this helps, although you may be further on than i thought, in which case start messing with new ROMs now :)

Increase the size of your VM heap: there will be guides somewhere.

Try adjusting settings with Blade Buddy (see my sig). Stagefright can make a big difference on games.

I was running CM7 with ADW EX & found it to be very laggy. Someone mentioned that the Xperia launcher was pretty smooth so I gave it a try & it's like having a new phone.

Yes, changing the launcher changes your phone a lot :) obviously its only the way to navigate to apps, the apps themselves are the same.

Whats why different layouts are always nice...makes your phone feel different.

I personally use the stock 2.3 launcher for CM7

The stock launcher is ADW on CM7, but I just installed EX over the top as I'd already paid for it so can't really comment on the performance from stock. The Xperia launcher is really nice though & is well worth a look.
