The ZTE Racer is sold to you from an operator that contains a STOCK ROM.

The STOCK ROM is made up of 2 parts

The BOOT partition (a Linux Kernel and some drivers)

The Android System (Customised by the Operator)

To produce a good boot.img ROM developer will either

re-use the already compiled Kernel

modify (hack) an already compiled Kernel

use someone else's already compiled Kernel

Compile their own Kernel (from sourcecode)

They may choose not to even include a boot.img

If this is so - then the Kernel you have on your device (in the BOOT partition) will not be affected.

Next they will produce thier ROM (Android System)

Choose a Standard ROM to be the BASE of thier ROM

Remove thing they don't like / need

Add things to make it better

Tweak settings

Some ROMs when you install them will wipe you DATA and CACHE partitions (will factory reset).

ROM developers will usualy warn you.

When you update to a newer version of the same ROM you usually dont have to Factory Reset .

Again ROM developers will usually warn you when you have to.

When moving between ROM's that are different you nearly ALWAYS have to Factory Reset.

When you first boot into a new ROM a startup procedure of some kind will happen.

This will take much longer than a normal bootup.

Important things are going on - let it do it.

You must only apply patches & Themes to your device after you have let the ROM boot once.

When it comes to installing there are only 2 kinds of ROM

ROMs that can be installed with Clockwork

ROMs that can be installed as a Total Phone Transfer (TPT) only Chinese TPT Roms At The Mo

Some ROM developers provide them packaged in both ways.

If boot and ROM are different what happenes when I install my recovery boot.img on my 2.3 ROM ?

I am using ZTE racer which was on stock rom 2.1

i've updated the rom from the above link.. "* Rom By Rexchun Android 2.3 update-cm-7.0.0-mooncake Based On Zte Blade"

everything is perfect... theres only nd only one problem in my phone,,

i have lost the "market" application,(which i've downloaded now....) and after a manual download, the phone asks for an account in order to run "market", now,i cant add a google account by my phone... the application crashes.. it returns to the previous screen(menu screen)

(i've tried other roms also, they too hv the same problem)

plz hlp me out soon,, :(

which version of CWM recovery do you have installed?

try this version of gapps HERE it will delete any other market vending.apk`s and install a fresh newer versions

someone else had similar problem and it was solved HERE

i wiped the things nd installed the new stable/reliable rom "cm7_2.3.7_Racer_full_swap-248.zip"

on the first boot, i had the same problem, "market app" crashing everytime,

then i again wiped the things nd installed "cm7_2.3.7_Racer_full_swap-248.zip"

and without rebooting, i installed the same .zip file which you gave me here..

finally, market app is working fine..

now the only problem is that i can download apps from the market, but after the download when the installation takes place, the phone automatically reboots and the apps dont get installed.. :(

(And i'm using "recovery-RA-mooncake-gen1-v2.img")

Plz hlp.. :(

i`d suggest installing/using CWM v4.0.1.0 mooncake.img gen1

try doing it through terminal emulator on your phone (apps menu)

1. Download recovery-clockwork-4.0.1.0-mooncake-gen1.img from THIS , rename it to recovery.img and copy to the root of the sd card

2. Open terminal emulator and type "su" and hit enter (this will give super user to the emulator) and after that type the following

flash _image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img

and you should be fine, to enter recovery either reboot into recovery from phone being on or turn phone off and then press and hold vol- and press power button once whilst still holding vol- wait 5 secs and you should have recovery screen, you can follow the instructions on my ROMS thread to install any ROM, any problems let us know :)
