internal storage & memory

I am running CM7 stable

I always found this interesting that Blade has 512 ram and 512 rom spec (I think?)

But my blade only shows 416 memory and 208 internal storage.

This was also happening in other custom roms so I think it is normal.

But why does it show a different figure?

Your fisrt time using a computer like device?

There is no simple explanation.

If it is the spec you are questioning, you just have to believe it.

But still strange to have a huge difference.

Internal storage size is the size of the writeable partition (data). I don't remember exactly what the ~100mb ram is reserved for, but if I'm not mistaking it was for some hardware specific stuff leaving the rest for your os and apps.

Yes-some is locked down for the android os etc.

Also, if you have chosen (like myself) to "lock home app in memory" or "lock messaging app in memory" then I think the memory they use is deducted here, though I am unsure.

the amount of RAM in the device is 512. However a portion of that RAM is reserved for the radio, the thing that allows you to make phone calls not pickup music!. The internal storage like the RAM is partitioned. I think there is three partitions and the bit you get to install apps on is a tiny 100 mb. the rest is for the OS etc

answer to the orginal post:

1) internal memory. when stock the internal memory is partitioned in the following way: 41mb for cache, 207mb for system and 208mb for data.

the 207 system is where the rom is installed, however most roms are around 128mb. therefore about 80mb is wasted on stock partitions.

the 41mb cache is only needed for older android versions such as eclair. so again if your using something like cm7 this can be changed to 2mb.

therefore the data partition (where you install your apps and is the value shown in settings > storage) can be increased to around 326mb (208+79+39)

the rest must be left for the phone.

in order to repartition your internal memory easily i recomend wbaw's excellent tpt script. head over to this thread

2) as the above post sed, some ram is defined by the system to be only available to non-android-user processes. such as keeping the radio (phone call stuff) working.

the usuable ram is something like 414 (don't quote me on this) and i wouldn't advise trying to change this!

414 is plenty.

Well, that cant be right because I have 161 MB Of internal storage left!

Wow if the ram & rom is partitioned and its reserved for system, it makes much more sense.

Thank you for all those answers.

One other question.

I am using CM7 stable, and the ROM itself provides a menu that I can move any apps to SD card

and there is also a menu that asks where I will store any new apps to the device (and I select External only)

But it seems there are apps that just do not export to the external memory.

Or if I force it to move it to SD card, it only moves a fraction of what it should be.

eg/ app is 10mb - i move it to SDcard - app is 256kb only (leaving most data in default phone storage)

Is this because the app itself is not programmed to be installed in an external memory?
