Hi all,

I remember about 6 months ago having the myplayer app where i could download bbc programs and watch them later on my phone. The latest update is awful, I found an old update where you couls still use i player, but i cant figure out how to make it download stuff. Does anybody know where i can get an old old myplayer apk file to install??

Many Thanks,

Dave

I don't know about myplayer but as a workaround you could download the programs on your computer using get_iplayer, transfer the resulting video file to your phone's memory card and then use any compatible media player on the phone to play it.

Does that work? I thought you had to have some special bbc iplayer software installed to download programs and they are in a special format?

get_iplayer doesn't work very well nowadays doesn't it?

It used to be great when the dev was still working on it, but I think the BBC have changed some protocols which broke it?

There are some unofficial versions I think, but I don't know where to get them.

The BBC got wind of MyPlayer so he had to remove all BBC content and you could only stream commercial stations. For a while you could downgrade to an old version and use that to download programmes still, but in December that option disappeared from all of the BBC programmes, so you could still stream BBC with the old version but not download (I assume the BBC did something here to stop the software from accessing the download options of the BBC iPlayer website). Such a shame, as the offical iPlayer for Android is good for streaming the radio (attach to stereo, and no need to but a new digital radio) but you really want to able to download programmes on your phone to watch later, especailly as you'll prob want to watch them whilst travelling, and 3g wouldn't work and most free train wifi wouldn't let you anyway. Still don't really understand why we can't download them - maybe something to do with DRM, but could it really be that difficult for a massive wellfunded institution to come with a DRM download of programmes for Android?

And whilst I'm at it, it'd be great if you could download C4 and/or ITV programmes to watch later too (that's in general rather then phone specific)

It does have a new developer and it works fine for me: http://www.infradead.org/get_iplayer/html/get_iplayer.html

The only thing that doesn't work (that used to) is live streaming, but once it's available on-demand from the BBC iPlayer website it becomes available to download using iPlayer.

You can even choose the quality you want (up to HD if available, though the Desire probably won't play that very well).
