Guest m_w_clarke Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 (edited) Like the title says, I'm wondering if the digital copies of films that are thrown in with the DVD/Blu rays work on the Blade? I don't want to "activate" a digital copy and have it not being able to play on a portable device. Thanks Edited April 20, 2011 by m_w_clarke

Thanks Never tried, but you might have to re-convert them using Handbrake or similar so that they play. I'd be imagining that the bitrate might be a bit high for the phone to handle without stuttering and if they're not MP4's it'll likely not work at all. I normally just rip them from DVD/Bluray and re-encode from there. It's probably more hassle but I've been doing it since before they had 'digital copies' so am a bit stuck in my ways :)
Guest Mushroom_Lord Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 Oh A direct .vob file from a dvd will play on the blade... albeit VERY slowly. <- Seriously like 1 frame/sec. However I spose on a faster device (what the fastest android device atm?) would quite possible handle it quite well with cm7... Blu-Ray err....big no-no...maybe on the X00M though <- though I think even that may need to be modded... Handbrake is very fiddly -aspect ratios can go HORRIBLY wrong. But I did manage to get it working after a while...
Guest DannyDanny Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 Playing DVD quality videos on Blade? Big no no. It can play using vital player (which can play almost all codecs) but it will be very very slow. If you want to play videos I suggest you convert them to a much smaller size compressed video. Usually converting to Blade's resolution 800x480 will be too big. It needs to be smaller

I encode at 800x480 all the time, and as long as you don't got silly with the bitrate it works fine. (Running CM7, o/c to 691Mhz)
Guest cmberry20 Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 (edited) Agreed. I use handbrake to encode all my DVDs, MKVs (720P & 1080P) and I use 800 X 480 red. The files play back amazingly & look great on the Blade. No stutter and no audio sync issues. And, Handbrake is one of easiest encoding software I've used! ! Edited April 20, 2011 by cmberry20

Yes you can use yxplayer to play them after conversion or rockplayer
Guest sambartle Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 (edited) The OP means the DRM encumbered rubbish that ships on the disc (or as a download in some cases) with some DVD/BluRays.. Not ripping it yourself. The answer is that I don't think it will, in fact i'm almost certain it wont. Like this for example: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Inception-Limited-...l/dp/B0041O4SA4 Edited April 20, 2011 by sambartle

Like this for example: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Inception-Limited-...l/dp/B0041O4SA4 That is exactly what I meant - and spookily I also had the digital copy of Inception in mind as well! :) Yes, I guess I could have been a bit more concise in my question, but it was the DRM I was really asking about. But thanks to the others about ripping the DVD; I've tried doing this before but recently it has failed because of copy protection on the disc (Disney discs primarily)

Sadly it seems that too much power has been given to entertainment organisations so if caught you'll likely get a nasty letter through the post from your ISP instead of being assumed innocent. Guest cmberry20 Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 AnyDVD works well when ripping/converting DVDs - it removes encryption/protection on the fly & you dont need to do anything. Not come across a DVD that it cant do. Pity its not free. However, there is DVD43 & its supposed to work very well. Not tried it myself (having AnyDVD) but its supposed to be as good. btw, when playing converted MP4 on my blade i use the default play as it seems to work the best.
Guest Mushroom_Lord Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 I made a text reference when I was testing getting outtakes from hotfuzz working on my blade. I was using "any video convertor" and tried to clip out the "letterbox" so the blade didn't have to cope with as many pixels. The software is very good, because - unlike handbrake - it provides a visual "box" as to what parts of the video will be viewed - with corresponding manual controls to get it bang on. (did some aspect ratio math - trimmed away all the black by removing 85px above and below - to fit perfectly) And well - it looked perfect in qqplayer (using system decoder on cm7, oc to 691mhz) BUT - ANY VIDEO CONVERTOR HAS A BIG BUG. Subtitles are ALWAYS overlayed. I sivved through many options - and even contacted support - but their advice hasnt helped. I did create a txt file for video conversion on the blade on my pc to refer to - ill try dig it up for you guys.
Guest Mushroom_Lord Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 (edited) Im not too sure if this is right - someone correct me if its wrong VITAL INFO FOR PHONE VIDEO CONVERTING Use: Handbrake 0.95+ Source: FOLDER Container: MP4 Tools>Options>General> Disable use .m4v (not sure if it is required) IF 2.35:1 ASPECT PICTURE>Size>source 720 x 576____ CHANGE TO 720 x 406 Loose the aspect ratio (use NONE - not custom) Manually crop to left:0 top:85 bottom:85 right:0 Modulus 16 Disable video filters Audio>AAC (320 kbps for top quality) Subtitles>disable(remove any existing) USE FFMPEG ENCODING Bitrate about 1700kbps. (avoid making your total bitrate [audio+video] over 2000kbps - I think thats a vague rule of thumb limit) Preview If okay: Encode Edited April 20, 2011 by Mushroom_Lord

(As a disclaimer: I am not a lawyer!) No you definitely are not.. not in the UK at least. There is no legal means of format shifting... even ripping CDs to mp3 is actually illegal if you are not the copyright owner. (Which is not the same as owning the CD) (The Digital Economy Bill was supposed to change this but that part got pulled at the last minute.. so its still illegal at the minute) PS... I'm only mentioning it so people know they cant rely on that excuse.. As far as I know no one has ever been prosecuted for it. Edited April 22, 2011 by sambartle
