Advent Vega

Hi,

Firstly let me point out that I am not any kind of Computer wizz or geek, I can find my way around a PC but I have zero knowledge of the Android system or the Advent Vega.

Against by advice and better judgement my daughter decided to spend £250 on this device from PC World, she was told that she would be able to access the Android Market.

I have now spent enough hours going around in circles trying to get the AM app on the screen, I finally ended up in something called a "Kitchen" telling me that I couldn't proceed to "Bake" because I am not a premium member and I will need to part with £9.99-£29.99 to proceed, Kitchen-Bake??? WTF is all this????.

I am not even sure if this is what I am trying to do.

Can any body explain in VERY simple terms how I can get the AM app on the screen, or should I throw this piece of **** in the skip!

Best regards

Steve

I think with the manner in which you have described the Vega and the way in which you have put your question to this group you'd be better taking it back to PC World and getting a refund. You clearly have no patience or wish to see the work required through as you are anti from the start. If on the other hand you are willing to put the time in and present your questions with a better attitude in future then I'm sure we can all help you. :)

Basically you just need to flash a rom

In the MCR8 thread you can get a pre-back, this is free and requires no membership

This rom has market but is no longer the best rom to have but is a great place to start.

Read that thread, learn how to flash it, and do so.

After you have done this you can then learn about installing ClockWorkMod recovery and from there you can install one of the number of other roms.

Take it a step at a time and be prepared for lots of reading, especially if this is your first android device, which I am assuming it is...

I agree with what trevor said, you are talking like it's our fault you don't know what android is or how to operate it. Take it back, buy an ipad and everything will be done for you. No spending hours installing market or learning how to use it.

No more than you deserve, are you always aggressive when you ask for help?

Here is a really simple way of just adding Market

XDA

Even though I know next to nothing about flashing Andriod devices but I found Paul's r8 ROM really easy to install. It gives you a much better device than simply adding Market.

The only thing you have to be careful about is installing the correct USB driver. If you use the one that comes in Paul's zip file it is really easy. When Windows asks which driver to install guide it to the USB driver you have unzipped. All you do is connect the Vega to the PC. After it has connected and you have installed the USB driver, the Vaga will be seen as an external storage device. You then double click on the .bat file that comes with the ROM. You will then see a load of files being coped to the Vega and when it has finished reboot. It takes a couple of minutes (providing you use the correct USB driver).

Hi There

I'd suggest it's not a great idea coming onto a forum for users of a particular product and start slagging it off!!

If you had done any research before parting with £250, you would have realised that the stock Vega does NOT come with the market, but because of some great work by some of the people on this forum, there are a number of 'custom ROM's' that can be used to replace the standard operating system and these 'unlock' the full potential of the Vega by giving you all the Google apps and market, along with lots of other improvements...

I knew nothing about how to install these myself a couple of months ago, but by reading the forum posts and with a bit of trial and error, I now have a Vega that is at least as capable as the latest Ipads, but at half the price. :)

All been said but got to add my tuppence...

If you ask in the right way (and your opening shot was lousy), the good people on here can make the Vega the best value for money, bar none.

If you want an iPad, then buy one, if you want a device which is unbeatable for £250, you're in the right place.

Hey you gotta be fair, as the guy said he is trying to sort it for his daughter so it's obvious the person at PC world has just gone oh yeah try Modaco. If it is your first time installing a ROM in this way its always hard

I remember took hours to do when I bricked my Pulse.

You do have to have the patience to learn what to do, the Vega is a very good project tablet i've had mine two weeks and I love it its completely different to when I bought it. I would suggest that if you don't think you can do it take it back and get an iPad, it costs a bit more but its ready out of the box.

Easiest way to do anything now is to run the easy clockwork installer

boot into clockwork

flash a rom :)

Hi Aircool

If you just want to get the market working this is probably the easiest way. You just copy the zip to the Vega sdcard and flash from the software tool menu in settings.

Hi Solidare,

Thanks for the information in plain English and the link it has worked a treat, again thank you. Additional thanks to the other genuine helpful comments

To all the other members whose smart ***** smug comments where about as much use as a chocolate fireguard, I did not buy the Vega it was my daughter and she was told by the equally ignorant salesman in PC World that AM was already on it!

Neither myself nor my daughter want to get involved in the nuts and bolts of this device she just wants it fit for the purpose it was bought.

I do not have the time or inclination to get involved with a geeky circle of people who obviously have no life outside of microchips and their own cosy little circle of geeky friends.

I must say that I belong to a number of forums and have never come across so many self opinionated smug ******* who prefer to talk down to someone who is at his wits end trying to understand something that he didn’t want in the first place.

I wish you all a early “crash” and as many frustrating hours ahead that I have spent.

I–pad next time

Again, no need to stab the unhelpful people in the same post you half praise those of us that actually tried to help you.

You are not going to help yourself.

and a tip for your daughter... never...ever...ever listen to anything PC World staff say, they know nothing!

Edit: Android is much much much better when you learn to put custom roms on to get full enjoyment, this goes for all android phones and tablets. The same would be said about iOS too if you could actually easily mess with it....

Really nice. You haven't even tried to understand.

Had you asked nicely, I would have given up several hours if necessary, of my own time, freely and without asking for anything in return, as I have done before and will do again simply to help a community. I have too much life outside of here which makes it all the more difficult to donate my time and frankly, it's people like you who every so often make me pause and wonder if it's worth it.

But every so often, some kind soul with good thoughts and good intentions makes it worthwhile and says a simple "thank you".

You know nothing about the people here, some of whom I have come to "virtually know" over several months and they are far from opinionated, smug geeks. Indeed, their attitude is significantly more amenable than yours.

Good bye.

LMAO! why do you even own a PC then! or a tablet?

you don't have to be a Geek to enjoy modern technology, I don't consider myself a geek at all yet I own a smartphone and tablet...

yeah maybe I am a 'geek' in the sense I can do what I need to do on the technology I own rather than insult the very people you are trying to get help from, way to go genius....

and for the record, I now regret my posts above that genuinely did try to help you..

As you obviously have trouble reading, I sent a genuine thanks to the members who helped and I again endorse that gratitude 100%.

Curious though, if this device is so good and you are so learned, why do you think it would have been necessary to take "several hours" for you to sort it out when Solidare understood my problem straight away and provided a simple link?

Thank you again Solidare.

All finished now?

No problem.

It was obvious from your first post the Vega was causing you some frustration. Maybe you should have had a cuppa before you posted eh' lol.

Glad you got it working

Que?

If you aren't a "geek" and you don't know Android, why did you tell her not to buy it? Genuine question, not trying to get at you but I am curious to know why the Vega gets a bad reputation from someone who has no knowledge of it.

:)

Aircool ... if you think this crowd are tetchy, you should try posting an SFQ on a car club forum !

Mild sarcasm here ... full fireproof suit required on some forums.

(SFQ = silly effing question)

Wow, I'm glad I only stumbled across this now ...

Thank god I wasn't here at the beginning otherwise I would've let all hell loose on this guy. I don't know who some people think they are sometimes. They come here asking for help and then that happens! If you had presented yourself more politely everyone here would be fighting over who helps you first.
