Boot Animation/Splash Image

I not sure what is the difference between the two,

right now I have A green android logo which then goes to the "Cyanogen Mod" screen with the spinning arrow, I dont really know which one's which.

Please help, I want to customize them, thankyou

I think the word bootanimation was a bit of a give away :)
