HTC Desire S - Very cheap!! (EXPIRED)

I've decided to move on and sell the SF to get the HTC Desire S.

If my calculations are correct it will cost only £160 over the course of 24 months.

But in brief:

24 month O2 contract paying £10.50 (+£3 data package) = £13.50pm (£324)

- £91 Cashback through Topcashback

- £3 data package (ability to cancel after one month)

= around £6.67 per month (£160 in total)

I'm planning on selling my SF on ebay, which seems to be going for around £150 as it's the OLED one!!

True, but O2 give a 14 day money back guarantee, so if it doesn't track during this time you can just cancel the contract.

Cracking deal, no doubt about it, but as far as i'm aware you won't get to cancel the £3 data after one month - it's part of the tariff (it's just that you get the choice of how much data), it's the bolt-ons that can be cancelled after the first month.

I suspect that may be true, however I got one of the websupport minions to confirm that you could cancel the web bolt on and saved the screen grab, which hopefully will be enough to strong arm O2 into taking it off once they've paid Quidco.

But still, it's no deal breaker, happy with the price in spite of that.

Now just have to hope that the ones they are shipping are S-OFF!

No, this is true. I think I will be happy with the stock HTC gingerbread install if the worst comes to the worst and it's S-ON.

Will almost be nice to take a break from the constant process of researching ROMs and wiping and uprading!

Mmmmm. I received my SF last Monday and have not modded it yet as I haven't decided which ROM to go for... and I've been testing out the GPS too.

Now I wonder if I can return it under 7 day distance selling regs (r their own T&Cs) for a refund? If so I will be tempted to go the the Desire S.... as I believe it will give me better build quality, camera, 2 year warranty, speed and probably remove the need for me to think about modding at all. I'm on O2 anyway so everything should work fine and don't even need to unloack.

The San Fran doesn't connect to my car head unit as it stands so maybe that is good enough reason to return it. Guess I will just have to wait until tomorrow to find out.

If you work for a large company who buy lots of phones, you may be able to take advantage of their buying might. A company I was working for are changing from Orange to O2, I managed to get a desire S for £255 cash, unlocked, direct from O2. Worth a try.

depends how much the galaxy your getting is, and if you prefer big screen, desire S is a small upgrade from Desire.

Total cost is 324.00. I phoned O2 & they said that the package is not downgradeable to 10.50 p/m although I appreciate this conflicts with what others have been told. Quidco & Topcashback are not 100% guaranteed - I have had Quidco claims rejected for absoultely no reason & there is no appeals procedure.

Seems the location of the wifi antenna on the Desire S is not good

The HTC Desire S has a death grip problem, similar to the iPhone 4's much-publicised problems. In this case, it's not mobile signal that's affected, but Wi-Fi. The antenna appears to be mounted behind the plastic panel that houses the camera, and it's extremely vulnerable.

If you hold the phone in a normal landscape typing position your fingers will cover that spot, and the Wi-Fi signal will drop. If you place the phone on your body – such as resting it on your leg – facing up, the Wi-Fi signal will drop.

How bad is the drop? If you're right near the router, it's unlikely you'd make the signal totally disappear in casual use, but we did manage to reduce some connections from the full four bars to none just by placing a palm against the plastic area.

In more realistic use, a medium to low signal is likely to drop to zero within a few seconds of you covering the spot.

Even placing the phone down on certain surfaces can affect things – we put the Desire S down on a magazine and saw the signal drop a bar on very strong networks. Picking it up less than an inch restored it. That small difference was enough to see some weaker other networks disappear when scanning.

You might be ok then, guess you'll find out in a month or so, fingers crossed for you.

Would be good if some of the people who buy this deal could report back in a month or so with their experiences as to whether the data is removable, may be a handy reference for future deals.

Yes I've read the same on a few reviews, some suggest it's bad while others seem to think it's negligeble.

Given the Blade's wifi eccentricities I will probably learn to live with it regarless. I've yet to use a smart phone without some perculiar and annoying quirk, a don't expect this to be any different. But the faster performance and a camera that can actually be used for it's intended purpose are what tipped my hand.

Mine should arrive tomorrow so I will give the wifi grip of death a try and post my findings. May even post a side by side comparison vid if I get time and anyone is remotely interested.

read that it's HSPA capable, so 14.4mbs download speed.

Eurodroid.com have been given one by 3 UK to review and they tested for the wifi issue and cannot replicate it.

After looking it up and contacting his manager you can't remove the useless £3 a month bolt-on :)

I can access my online account now and it looks like you CAN remove the bolt on. It treats the tariff as £10.50 and there is an option to remove the bolt-on.
