Im gradually building up my Android knowledge and I really want to install Cyanogen Mod 7 (stable) on my phone. I have a OLED version which has the baseband ending in BO5, it is also a GEN 1 phone. Ive read the forums on Cyanogen and posted a topic and i get responses said that GEN 1 phoens were compatible but on this forum it says you must have a GEN 2. I have also looked around YouTube and asked the maker what phone gen they are using and was a mix of gen 1 and gen 2 phones. So im confused because of these conflicting posts can someone please clarify this. Also is it best to install ROMs by using ROM manager or Clockwork ???

Stable is gen 1. The thread covers nightlies since stable which are now gen 2. Rom Manager is just a front end for clockwork so it doesn't make any difference to the end result. Whatever is easier for you. :)

Thank You so much for replying to this and is nice to get some clarification as im the type of person that gets really nervous about doing anything risky to my phone. What are the risks of flashing a custom ROM providing you backup your ROM and do nandroid back ups ?

Unless you do something really silly (Like juggle your phone as its flashing) then the risks are almost non-existent

Flashing roms via clockwork carry very little risk of bricking your device. Almost all bricks are recoverable

Thank You very much for responding. :) When installing a custom ROM is it best to keep it plugged in or keep it on full battery not plugged in ?

Charged but unplugged is how I've always done it. The older methods of putting roms on even called for the battery to be taken out at one point - never mind the power lead. :)

So all i need to do now to install Cyanogen Mod 7 (stable release) is to :

Root using Universal Androot

1.Download ROM Manger

2.Flash Clockwork Recovery

3.Download CM7 within ROM manager

4.backup current ROM

5.wipe cache & data

6.install Google Apps

7.Wait for it to install and boot into CM7

Wipe cache and data

Flash CM7

Flash Google Apps

Steps 4, 5, 6, & 7 can be done in one step in Rom Manager. Rom Manager is awesome. :)

Thanks everybody for all your help, im quite the parnoid person when it comes to hacking tech of any sort. I presume that if CM7 doesnt boot then it hasnt successfully flashed the ROM and i can just boot in clockwork mod and restore from my nandroid backup ?

Also just looked through the forums again and people are saying that you must have a GEN 2 ZTE Blade to run CM7 and to make it work with a GEN 1 phone you need a converter im so confused :S

yep, absolutely right. just restore the nandroid you did.

with this bit of genius:

http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...rsal-converter/

you can install most CM7 nightlies onto a gen 1 phone, even though it says gen 2 on the thread.

the converter is out of date, the new safe method is wbaw's gen1 to gen2 tpt method http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...n2-tpt-upgrade/

you can downgrade safely to gen1 if needed, and you retain your imei

Im kind of new to all this flashing ROM stuff, i basically want a stable day to day ROM that looks cool, fast and has lots of features and CM7 (stable) ticked all those boxes, im not interested in nightlies or anything like that. I dont want to mess around with my phone too much and im probably not prepared to mess around changing my phone from GEN 1 to GEN2. If CM7 is not compatible with GEN1 are there any other good alternatives. Cyanogen wiki says that its for GEN 1 only and on Cyanogenmod forum it says GEN1 when i posted a thread. However on this forum they keep on saying that i must have GEN 2 but people in this thread are saying that it works with GEN1, SO CONFUSING !!

Cm7.00 stable is Gen1

Cm7.0.2 stable is Gen2

the TPT would simply update your blade to function like a Gen2 to allow 7.0.2 to be installed with all it's kernel fixes. The Cyanogenmod Wiki has not been updated.

I keep on finding posts like this:

http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...zte-blade-gen1/

This shows a list of the compatibility of the ROMS and at the bottom it says that CM7 stable is for GEN2. Im very cautious as i know that if you install a GEN2 ROM on a GEN1 phone then it bricks the phone.

However on the CyanogenMod 7 wiki it says on the right hand panel that 7.02 is GEN1 only and next to the update guide it says GEN1 only

if you install a gen2 rom via clockwork on a gen1 phone, you can always recover by TPT

if you upgrade a gen1 phone to gen2 by TPT you can always recover by TPT

if you have a stock gen2 phone TPT is not available, and you are left using windows flashers to try and fix your phone at present.

CyanogenMod Wiki has not been updated, the Gen2 decision was taken last week, and 7.0.2 stable was not announced until last night.

I have a GEN1[OLED] ZTE Blade and was planning to install CM7 (stable) via ROM manager. Will this work ?? How easy is it to recover using TPT ? Also the CyanogenMod looks like it has been updated as it talks about 7.02 version and says GEN1 only and says nothing about GEN 2 compatibility.

TPT is basically, an image folder in your sd card, hold volume + and menu, press power button, phone flashes rom image located in image folder.

It's a very basic level flasher, used by ZTE to install firmware

OK, so is the default ROM in the image folder or what ?

And am i safe to install CM7 (stable) on GEN1 Blade or not ????

It's fairly simple.

Up to and including Nightly 39 (including 7.0.0 stable - which is older than N39) is gen 1

Everything higher than N39 (including 7.0.2 stable) is gen 2.

The only confusion stems from the fact that most of us here have been following Cm7 since day 1, using only 2 or 3 threads, so the thread covering the gen 1 stable has crossed over into the gen 2 nightles. So whilst early posts are about Stable, the thread title is warning about gen 2 because that's what applies to the latest versions. 7.0.0 stable is relatively old now!

7.0.0 stable is safe to install on gen 1, However, for what it's worth, I think N35 is the most stable build on a gen 1 OLED phone anyway. After that things got a bit experimental. :) The version called Stable has an issue where it sometimes crashes whilst charging. TFT is a different matter because they had GPS crashes back in versions as early as N35 I think.

I'm on n35 myself have previously been up as high as 7.0.0. Though I'm tempted to gen 2 and go for this new 7.0.2 after I'm finished in the sun (yay for matte laptop screens allowing forum posting from the garden o/ )

So its safe to install CM7 (stable) on my GEN1. Also to get the nightlies i have to pay for premium ROM manager :). And not bothered about GPS as i never use it because it drains the battery and uses so much data.

I have a Macbook Pro 13", BOO for glossy screens when its sunny.

Thanks for your comment

Yes it's safe.

Nightlies can be downloaded and installed manually by choosing install zip from sd card. Which is the way you'd have to do any rom that isn't Cm7 anyway. :)

http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=blade

You would have to do your own backup, wiping and installation of gapps as you noted earlier though.

Rom Manager Premium is worth the cost for the convenience if you decide you like CM7 enough to keep it regularly up to date. you pretty much just press 1 button and ok a couple of times to update CM7 each morning.
