Upgrade/Update Android on Orange San Francisco... for a beginner!

Hi there,

Picked up an Orange San Francisco last week and have to say I'm enjoying it so far! Then I stumbled across this forum specifically for this phone and have been reading into some of the threads... especially the ones about updating the firmware.

I'm a complete Android noob I have to admit and am a little perplexed by what I would need to do to get my phone up and running for Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Is there a step by step 'noob' guide available that I'm able to follow? I did check out this thread:

but it starts off by saying that its only for GEN2? How do I know if I am GEN1 or GEN2?

I'd be grateful for a little push in the right direction if possible!!

Install an app from the market (free) called ' Ask Mr Pigfish '

It will tell you instantly whether you have Gen1 or 2 and is highly recommended by anyone on these forums

Seconded most likely Gen1 OSF is UK only i think and we dont have a 2.2 update because orange suck. Best too check

Mr PigFish says I have a Gen1... So I presume I just take one of the GEN1 threads from the front page and start installing a new version of Android?

Thank you for the links. It seems like a Gen2 will allow you to have the very latest Gingerbread ROM, apart from that to me there doesn't seem to be a difference... that could just be me though!!??

So I'm gonna try putting 2.2 Froyo on I think... Is there any recommendation as to which one is best?

I think the upgrade to Gen 2 from Gen 1 will be worth it in the long run as some roms seem to be just aimed at the Gen 2 models as for which ROM I too am wondering this It seems Swedish Spring is regarded as very stable while CM7 has its little bugs but not tried either *yet*

Personally I love fibblesan's ROM.

But hes discontinued it and instead told people to use Swedish spring instead.

Though I prefer Fibblesans ROM (flb) everyone uses Swedish spring now.

NOTE: FLB is gen1 only but SS works on both gen1 and gen2

Best 2.2 ROM has to be fibblesans or pauls they are pretty close in features really. But I prefer Cyanogen MOD CM7 because it has copy and paste and it runs faster for me ;]

Ah cool nice to get a response from someone that has tried quite a few different roms so you would go with CM7 over Swedish Spring ? I am undecided over which rom to install (it will be my first) tempted to go with CM7 but a lot seem to say overall Swedish spring is more stable.

Swedish Spring is more stable than CM7, but thats mainly because CM7 isn't finished yet. I would say try both and see which one you prefer.
