Guest Bobby Elliott Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 Can someone clarify a couple of things for me? What is recovery mode? Is it, as I presume, a state for installing updates and new kernals [ROMs]? Is it the same as that weird key combination (hold a key for 2 secs, hold another key for 2 secs, etc.) which takes you to the even weirder blank screen? What is Clockwork Recovery? Is it, as I presume, a program to assist with copying and recovering system images? How does it work? Through recovery mode? I am running Modaco R8 and I have a "Recovery" app in my app drawer. What does that do? Does it take you into recovery mode without having to resort to the Masonic key sequence? Does it come with R8 or have I succeeded in installing Clockwork Recovery (I have tried) without realising it? Thanks in advance.

Hi Bobby technically stupid so cant help with the first bits but i can with the last :) , you need to install clockwork mod ( i find vega tools does this so much easier than anything else ) so that when you run the recovery app in mcr8 it will launch or reboot i suppose to be accurate into clockwork mod recovery state. Clockwork mod is probably the most useful tool i have found since coming to android in february as a complet noob ( still not much further advanced :) ). install it and run it and see what it does. also if you install corvus5 rom they have Rom manager incoroporated which makes the whole process even simpler. so to answer your question recovery app in mcr 8 will do nothing unless you have clockwork mod installed first :( apologies for the ramblings

Recovery mode on most android devices is a way of powering up the device into a non stock rom (ie instead of booting andriod it boots some alternative software such as clockwork Recovery) this alternate boot rom is typically use for flashing new roms adding patches to the main rom, themes etc.... So om by phone the ZTE Blade I have clockwork recovery installed and to boot into clockwork recovery I turn on the phone and hold down the volume down key. Now on the Advent Vega THERE IS NO KEY COMBINATION TO POWER ON THE VEGA INTO RECOVERY MODE, so you need to install a special recovery app, (use Vega tools to install clockwork and the APK to reboot into recovery mode in one click!!) so you boot normally and run the recovery app that does a soft boot into clockwork: No direct boot to clockwork. Now this means that you need a bootable rom to go into clockwork recovery on the Vega. If you cannot boot the Vega or get ADB up you can do the weird 2s + 2s +2s key combo to bring the Advent vega into a mode where you can apply a stock rom. This wipes the Vega and installs a factory fresh ROM. CONFUSINGLY THIS IS OFTEN CALLED RECOVERY MODE! So RECOVERY APP is not the same as the "Masonic key sequence" No idea why the Vega does this non standard key sequence. I agree its really confusing. Vega Tools make this whole thing simpler, providing a point and shoot solution with all the software ready to go!! FINALLY THERE IS AN APP CALLED ROM MANAGER THAT IS FREE AND PAID ON MARKET. THIS CLAIMS TO ALLOW SIMPLE ROM INSTALLED BLAH.... IT DOES NOT WORK ON THE ADVENT PEOPLE HAVE PURCHASED THE PREMIUM VERSION AND IT DOES NOT WORK ON THE ADVENT. Edited April 25, 2011 by FrownBreaker

Also when you say work? What do you mean? Will it allow clockwork to be installed? Will it update the main rom? Will it allow boot from cold to clock work or some other ROM? Does it provide booting into clockwork from Corvus (same as the recovery APK)? The ROM manager does allow updates to some parts of the system but its not the full feature set seen on other android devices as I understand it. Edited April 25, 2011 by FrownBreaker

Corvus and newbe5 put it in there rom to replace recovery from pauls rom and i use it to launch recovery at least once a day :) , i havent used it to update the main rom but the option is there , so sorry cant be a lot of help other than to say that it does provide booting into clockwork ( and its the latest version of clockwork as well ) plus it updates regularly. If you want me to try anything just let me know. regards Al

Guest Bobby Elliott Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 Vega Tools make this whole thing simpler, providing a point and shoot solution with all the software ready to go!! Thanks for the explanations. The mist is clearing. Do you have to install the USB drivers on my PC before using Vega Tools? I have the nightmare combination of Windows 7, 64-bit, which defies every known solution to driver installation, so I hope not.

Thanks. update , it is actually the premium version that corvus/newbe5 included and i am at present backing up rom with it then will flash a new rom from it and report back later how it went :)

Looks like I will need to dig out that old lappy again...

I tried Simonta's software but this failed too on the dreaded Windows 7, 64-bit combo.
