Guest flegg Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 Hi All I hope someone can help me! I saw a Advent Vega on hot uk deals, and saw the poor reviews but saw that the Modaco update really improves it, so went out today and purchased one. Now I want to update the Advent Vega to the newest firmware from Advent before attempting to install a Modaco ROM/Firmware but for some reason I can't access recovery mode. I've connected the Vega via the USB load to a Windows 7 64bit laptop, I've held the power button on the vega for 6 seconds (after about 3 a power menu comes up, after about 5 it turns off anyway) I've waitied about 30 seconds, then press and held the back button (button on the top right as you look at the vega) for 2 seconds, then while holding the back button, I also press and hold the power button (left button as you look at the vega) for 2 seconds, then release the power button, then after another 2 seconds release the back button. This seems to do nothing, no screen flicker, no Windows 7 sound to confirm new USB device, no new hardware alerts. I've also tried this same combination with 1 second in between each button press and also 3 seconds. When I try turning the device back on as normal, the screen flickers, and the laptop alerts there is new hardware, then immediately disconnects again, Android logo appears on the Vega, then turns itself off again. When turning the vega on again, it then boots up as normal and works fine. I've downloaded the Vega Tools program, but anything I run says it cannot detect the device. I've also tried to download the Vega recovery tool, but that needs the market installed to download (which I don't have. What I do find strange, is that when the vega is powered on and working normal, and connected to the laptop, there still isn't anything being shown, not Android device, no mass storage device, nothing. Any suggestions on how I can get it into Recovery mode will be greatly received! :) Thanks

I've now downloaded all the files required, activated debugging mode and connected to laptop, but again, there is no installation prompt or confirmation that the tablet has been connected to the laptop, so can't install the driver. any suggestions?

Have you installed the usb drivers, if you have then skip the adb method and go straight to clockwork mod install of any of the latest roms. i would suggest using add.the.bad easy clockworkmod install and corvus5 rom. but honestly you will find this so much easier if you read as many of the user guides in the sticky posts as possible. i have only known android since february but have been able to get by using the guides which are very precise and using search as everything has already been answered somewhere. Most importantly dont panic, dont get annoyed and dont give up :) be prepared to fail and or screw up occasionally :)

I've had a look at a few step by step guides, and they either mention recovery mode (which I cannot get into for some reason, seems to be a possible issue with vega 1.10) or using clockwork recovery, which I don't have installed because I can't get it into recovery mode to install it and don't have the apps store installed to download it that way :) don't mind screwing up, and won't give up as long as I know I'm getting somewhere but at the moment, I'm not, been trying to get into recovery mode for 5 hours now, no luck

I know windows 64 bit has caused some issues but people have overcome them. i will let you know what i find

I'll do a search now thanks for your help
Guest jeffmasson Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 Starting to sound like a faulty USB cable try a different USB port as windows can ignore new devices sometimes. Also check device manger for it when plugged in may see it but not tell you.

Also check device manger for it when plugged in may see it but not tell you. I was thinking that, but as it boots normal, the laptop does see it, for 1-2 seconds and then disconnects as it boots so i don't think it's a faulty USB lead, but I will try another one Yep got device manager open all the time as I know it "refreshes" itself when new hardware is detect but there is no change at all when trying to go into recovery mode, I've also tried the USBDeview software to see if it's installed, but there's nothing there with the correct product code, so it's not installed either :/

Guest simonta Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 (edited) tried that, but installation fails as "no device found", vegatools cannot find the connected tablet (probably due to the drivers not installed for it because no hardware wizard has run when connected to install the drivers) I've also tried the AUDI program, which fails like a kid at an over 18 bar Hmmm, thanks for comment. Makes all the hard work worth it. I did say it was untested on x64 and looks like there is a problem, you're the second to report it. I'll fix it but I'm currently holding down 3 jobs so it will take me some time and I currently have no access to a 64 bit PC so I rely entirely on feedback and most of my questions and requests go ignored. If you are getting nothing in device manager, then no tool is going to work. Vega tools will not work without the correct drivers installed, AUDI can't install the correct drivers without something to work with. So let's take this step by step, and do slow down. You are trying to go far too fast without learning and forget everything you've seen on this thread so far. There are too many inaccuracies and guesses. First thing. You do need the recovery drivers. Without them, you can't restore your Vega if things go sour. Without them, you don't get clockwork mod and without them, several tools on this forum will not work. 1. To get into recovery, it's important to realise that the ONLY way to know you are in recovery is to watch device manager. You will see NOTHING on the Vega, not even the backlight (jeez I'm sick of writing this - PAUL FOR GODS SAKE MAN - STICKIES!!!!!!!!!). If you see the backlight, you've missed it. 2. Clockworkmod is also known as recovery. You can only get to clockwork via an app on a normally booted Vega. It is not the same as the "stock" recovery referred to in the Advent documentation and forget it for now. We need to get you into stock recovery. 3. You are pushing water uphill with 64 bit. I suspect from some info posted on the AUDI thread that there is a bug in the supplied driver installation and there is certainly a bug in AUDI so that's going nowhere. Do you have access to a 32 bit OS? 4. Getting into recovery takes practice. You get the hang of it eventually but you are either doing it incorrectly or you have a faulty Vega or cable. Let's recap: Battery charged (at least 80%) and charger plugged in. Hold back for 2 seconds (don't just count to 2, Kodak One, Kodak Two), then power for two seconds, then release power, 2 more seconds and release back. You will see APX appear as a driver. If you see the backlight, power off and try again. Hold power for at least 6 seconds to make sure it's off. Who knows why, but the timing can vary a little, even on the same Vega so try a little variation. 5. If you don't see ANY device in device manager appear when the Vega is booted and plugged in, with or without USB debugging turned on, then you have a problem with the Vega, the cable or your PC. Try another port on your PC, if you're using a hub, bypass it. If this still doesn't work, uninstall all of the root hubs in USB Controllers through device manager, reboot and try again. If you still get nothing, then try another PC. Nothing on that and you've got a hardware problem. 6. If you do see APX, it will have an exclamation mark. Make sure you are running device manager as admin. It is NOT enough for your user account to be in the local admins group. See my guide (search for YAUDIG) on how to do that. Then uninstall APX. Do NOT try to update the driver, it will likely fail. Right click your computer at the top of the device tree, select add legacy hardware, then do a manual install using "have disk" to install the Advent drivers. Good luck Edited April 25, 2011 by simonta

Good luck Hi Simonta I apprieciate all the work you have done helping the community here, i was only describing that the program failed to see the tablet at all, not that the program itself failed or failing, i apologise if this is how it came across. I eventually got it all to work and it seems i have an unusual usb lead! It only works one way! The original way nothing was being detected. Swapped the ends and it started to be detected and working a treat so id like to thank everyone here and in other posts for their help! Its very much apprieciated!
Guest simonta Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 OK, sorry. Been a LONG day and I've worked every day over the "holiday" so a bit tetchy I guess. Anyway, glad it's sorted but that lead! Now that's strange...
Guest achill Posted September 26, 2011 Report Posted September 26, 2011 Hi All First, sorry for my english (not my native language). Similar problem to that one above. Cant access recovery mode . Already tried all those magic tricks, after 3 days (literally) still no luck. Tried get into recovery using 2 sec back, 2 sec power, 2 sec back button with power cable attached and power cable off , Tried a bit more than 2 sec sequence and a bit less than 2 sec - the thing is that even after 1 second sequence backlite is on . What I mean is even when doing 1 second back button , 1 second power button timing after this 1 second power pressed I am getting back light and `starting Fastboot USB download protocol` info on the screen. So 2 second sequence wont work in my case -whenever I am pressing power button instantly backlight is on . Can anyone help me please ? What I am doing wrong? Guys, all the help would be very much apprieciated!
Guest mad-is Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 Hi! Did you manage to sort it out? Were you able to access recovery mode eventually? The problem may be also defective USB on the Vega side, meaning bad news. You either need new mainboard or are there other options? Guest achill Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 Yeah did it yesterday Aparently was using wrong USB cable! The trick to access recovery mode was in my case also holding BACK button while connecting power cable. Now everything works perfectly! Installed brand new vegacomb (btw amazing stuff guys!!!) So everything sorted Thanks! Hi! Did you manage to sort it out? Were you able to access recovery mode eventually? The problem may be also defective USB on the Vega side, meaning bad news.
