Hi Loki - this has been discussed to death already, though the basic info is probably buried a bit too deep in the relevant threads for you to easily access it

Steven Harper's guide has a little about this, but not so much about the reasons for the shift from 1 -> 2

The basic points are:

Newer blades are being released in some markets with a different memory layout

They require differently laid out ROMs

These are known here as Gen2 phones (actually identical to gen1 phones, just with a different layout of memory)

This offers faster data upload, quad band functionality and stronger phone and data reception (though each of these seem variable, with reports from quite a few people that they haven't acheived these on their networks - again there's a survey about this on here - I'm not looking to start any quarrels with people disagreeing with these comments!)

CM7 development is continuing only for Gen2, since it would be a pain in the ass to maintain two strands of development, so they kinda had to pick one of them

Gen2 was chosen since it has updated radio and the other advantages identified above - also because people with blades sold as Gen2 can't easily downgrade, while it was easier for those with gen1 to upgrade to gen2

Previously it was a little tricky to switch a phone from Gen1 to Gen2, but then very tricky to switch it back to Gen1 without corrupting your IMEI

Because of this lots of people didn't want to make the upgrade, since it was felt there was no going back

wbaw has come up with a much safer way of transitioning between Gen1 and Gen2 (unless you've previously updated Gen1-Gen2 with the windows method, or unless your phone was sold as Gen2)

So while previously a lot of people with Gen1 phones were reluctant to update to Gen2, I think since release of wbaw's TPT approach, people are much happier about making the switch, which is now actually a pretty trivial change from the user's perspective, and is easily reversed with wbaw's excellent guides (pinned above)

Also it's possible with kalt_kaffe's tools to make CM7 nightlies written for gen2 compatible with a gen1 layout, for those wanting to stay on gen1 (a few people seem to get better phone signal strength on

I hope that makes some sense and isn't too factually innaccurate

Perhaps we can let this one lie now...

I've just updated from gen1 to gen2 and i believe cm 7.0.2 alone is enough reason to upgrade to gen2.

- Gen2 does not have any problems so in worst case you wont notice any difference.

- IMEI issue was only there in initial upgrade scripts and in the latest gen1>gen2 scripts, there is no IMEI issue.

- You cant access fastboot mode from device (you can access it from PC anyways), but then fastboot is not something that a normal user use.

- You wont be able to use old ROMS, but most of those roms are unmaintained anyways.

SO I say upgrade to Gen2 and you will have the latest CM7 at your disposal. And you can always use Swedish Spring as a fallback 2.2 rom

EDIT: Oh ya, and you can always switch BACK from gen2>gen1 :)

How do you know if you have a gen 1 or 2?

Ask Mr Pigifish

(rather than ask for an explanation of the above, just search)

:)

Look at the pinned topics on the main "ZTE Blade ROMs and ROM customisation" page

Specifically, the one entitled "[APP] Ask Mr Pigfish - When in doubt if you have a Gen1 or Gen2 phone"

Not hard to find...

+that to GEN2 u get 95mb+ so that means u have a total of 303mb:).and if you have a good network provider then the speed of ur phone's internet is quite much faster..

Thanks for the nice summary.

But for me there is one question open: if the hardware is identical and it's just about the memory layout (which is configured in the kernel config, I guess) then why it's supposedly impossible to downgrade a native Gen2 phone? Even not even via TPT method according to wbaw's thread.

zte updated the TPT method for gen2 to only use image.bin files, as we do not currently know how these are created, TPT is not an option
