Android 3.0 for the Advent Vega

This morning i was furious with PC Wold as they refused to let me return my Vega as it was beyond their 28 day returns policy. I am a bit disappointed with the Vega because even after installing the latest ROM it now crashes at least once everyday and the batteries doesn't last long (as claimed on the websites) even if the screen brightnes is toned down and when it does the screen is very difficult to view.

My question is:

1. is there a new ROM being cooked now to address such issues and to make it even more stable?

2. are we gonna see a 3.0 update to the Vega anytime soon?

I hope it is. As my patience is running thin.....

what do you call the latest ROM? also i would say no to the honeycomb soon from what i read , and finally if the machine is faulty the 28 days dont apply, its faulty so they must either repair or replace.

stand your ground and give them hell :)

Doesn't sound faulty to me.

These are good tablets, but cheap. Value for money is excelent but you have to put up with some of the issues like viewing angle. Crashing once a day isn't much of an issue for me on a device that only takes a few seconds to boot.

A lot of recent roms still have the phone apis draining the battery, the "latest" have started to address this issue, the recent 2.3 builds are still in their infancy but getting there.

Dont expect v3 any time soon.

Sounds like you may be better off with a more polished tablet like the Motorola or ipad

To be honest ive been plesently suprised with the vega. The battery is perfictally good for me, more or less what was advertised and although i get the odd force close thats not a huge deal. The only thing that is really an issue for me is the screeen viewing angle and glare, but for £200 i have no complaints.

We should have a decent port of honeycomb and/or an official upgrade once its gone open source which will likely be after 3.1 is out probably a couple of months yet. Not sure what roms you have actually tried but corvus5 is definately woth trying, a fairly big improvement over the stock rom. Also CM7 is coming along nicely too.

To be fair im not sure about why you are furious with PC world if you had the thing for over a month and didnt return it then i see no reason why they should accept it. If it is faulty then you could return it with the warranty otherwise you should have returned it earlier. Otherwise they would have people walking in returning stuff every time they were a wee bit low on cash.

Can't say much about 3.0, only just got my Vega and put mcr8 on it and had no problems uptown now, apart from getting right drivers for PC. I would suggest if your not really happy with yours maybe eBay or loot/gumtree is the best place.

corvus5 is excellent running oc on the Vega too mine never crashes or reboots. It is very fast and I'm happy with it.

I was a bit frustrated with Paul's roms especially after having to pay 9.99 but now others are designing amazing stuff I wouldn't change it for any other tablet.

I have just changed from r8 to Corvus 0.5. It is a big improvement. However, I never really had any crashes under r8. Angry Birds froze and Toshba Media player force closes but other than that it was stable enough. With Corvus Angry Birds is a little more stable. I played with a Asus Transformer in PC world after 10 minutes I had a forced close that was running Honeycomb and cost £175 more than the Vega.

Battery life is not very good, so I charge it overnight and so far it has not let me down during the day. My ipad has much better battery life so is the tablet I take on long train journeys, but it did cost a lot more than the Vega.

google i/o, there big android date that they have every year, is 2 weeks today! its expected that they will release their next version of android then, which will be for tablets and phones, so the wait i dont think will be that long.

Back to the original post, sorry but what do you expect for £200 quid? you dont pay £4 quid to watch mansfield town play, then demand your money back because the quality of the football is poor? the ipad is £400 quid and the xoom is £480, the vega - has the tegra 2 dual core, i use corvus5 rom, i overclock it to 1.4ghz and its the fastest tablet out there. so cant complain with that.

and since your asking what roms is the best, putting custom roms onto your device voids your warranty, so your s*** out of luck there.

And all of our patience is running thin with pointless posts like yours, if you wanna know when 3.0 is coming out, why dont you look at the 30 other threads going on about honeycomb, instead you make yet another honeycomb thread.

When you think it`s clear a new HC tread pops up.

For me, the vega at £200 ( £250 I paid ) is value for money.

It`s fast , stable now , battery life ( 5 hours + )

Just compare it to what`s on e-bay and xoom, acers etc.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/10-2-Flytouch-3-SUPE...=item19c3f1ef63

Infotmic ARM11 1Ghz CPU ( slow compared to the vega`s dual core )

Approx. 3-4 hours ( it`s very hard to get less than 5 hours on vega)

10.2" inch 1024x600 resistive TFT touch screen (resistive TFT , say no more )

And you can`t get GPS under a £10 on the vega

O.K , the xoom and acer ( MAY ) to better , but is it worth that extra cash ? NOT FOR ME !!!

Lots of Roms if you are having problems you need to say which one is giving the problem. It shouldn't crash once a day if it does that regardless of what ROM you have if its persistent across several it needs to go back. Battery life is pretty good 7-10 hours which is pretty average what it lacks is the standby so it drops battery over time in that mode giving it a poor long term battery time compared to say an ipad. Anything over half brightness is too bright for me so it is usually at about a third to a quarter brightness and that is a full days use for me depending on what I am doing. Obviiously something like playing dungeon defenders will use more power than reading with the wifi off.

28 days is the limit for a no questions asked swap, if its past that you can still return it you just need to call support and make the arrangements if its actually faulty and return under warranty. Its also guaranteed past that for several years for manufacturing defects. They have a right to make sure the device is faulty so you need to actually talk to them before they will.

We just got 2.3 running okay I think 3.0 is still a bit away yet. Lots of people are waiting for lots of devices because google put the brakes on 3.0 being released to the public. No doubt it will appear eventually but its not going to be that big a deal if it doesn't.

Ye I agree with warriorscot. No way should your device crash every day, that's like your computer crashing once every day. If that was happening you would know something wasn't right so there's something not right going on inside your Vega.

I haven't got a Vega yet, but I've been told the battery life is pretty long considering the price you pay. 7 hours I believe you should get out of it. Obviously over time that will diminish as the battery gets older, but as a brand new tablet you should be able to well get out of it a full days charge, maybe a couple depending on how much you use it daily!

I would definitely say to return it as defected. No way should your Vega be behaving like that.

wait what? 28 days is no questions asked??? youve never worked in retail. You have 28days if its brand new unopenend. You have 12months manufacturers warranty if its deemed faulty, putting custom roms onto the vega voids the warranty. And btw i dont think his vega crashes everyday.... i just think hes just moanin kos hes unrealistic, buys the cheapest tablet available, moan that its not as good as a xoom or transformer.

I wonder how many people have actually returned a product UNOPENED and in it's original packaging because they genuinely changed there mind! :)

But having said that the Vega is a cheap tablet, so it could be crashing every day. Don't presume things lol. Thousands of Vegas are mass produced one of them was bound to be faulty. He was just unlucky to get the faulty one.

I am not sure yet, I only changed the rom to Corvus a couple of days ago. Also, to make comparison more difficult I am overclocking the CPU to 1.4.

Yesterday morning at 7.00 am the battery was 100% charged, by 10pm it was down to 17%. I had not used it a great deal during the day. I read an eBook for a while, played a few levels of angry bird did a little surfing and answered some emails. The absolute tops would be perhaps three hours actual use, but more likely a couple of hours, although it was on all day. My guess is that Corvus 0.5 gets through a fully charged battery much faster than r8.

My wife uses the ipad, and it goes for literally days before she gives it back to me to be recharged, and even then there is still lots of charge left.

For info Mint .... putting custom ROMs on the Vega does NOT void your warranty as according to Advent their warranty covers the hardware regardless of what firmware you put on it. I have not put this to the test myself but previous posts on the subject have always stated this to be the case. I would however suggest that if you intend to seek a refund/replacement because a certain feature is not working then you should at least test it on the stock ROM issued with the device beforehand to make sure it is not firmware causing the issue.

Energy efficient with its NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and LED backlighting, you'll benefit from many hours of battery life with the Advent Vega Tablet PC: 6.5 hours for demanding 1080p HD video playback or up to 16 hours for audio playback only (LCD off).

6.5 hour playing videos , I don`t think I`m getting that !!!!

I`ve have to leave it to play videos .

because most of the time it`s on satandby , do a little surfing , back on standby .

Check this again ,my vega at 1.4 ghz is lasting from 11 o'clock fully charged to 2 o'clock and its at 52% this is with wifi on in standby, general browsing, some acceloremeter games and also a few levels on angry birds.

Also if you made a nandroid backup of your system before you started modding it, it may be worth slapping that back onto the tablet. That way if they ask why you switched back from a custom rom to the original, just say you found the custom roms were giving you trouble so you switched back to the original.

Cracks me up that because it's cheap, it's somehow acceptable for it to be unstable.

Not that its unstable, people are comparing the vega to "their wifes ipad" who gets way longer battery, its people why buy the cheapest tablet available, then all they do is moan, kos it wasnt as good as what they thought it might be.
