HELP! having recently purchased my Orange San Francisco, I've managed to unlock the sim (to use my Vodafone sim), root the phone, loaded a custom ROM (r12-update-modacocustomrom-blade-kitchen-unsigned).

That's all fine, but when I look in 'Settings', 'About phone', 'Status', 'My phone number' reports "Unknown".

If I put the Orange sim back in, this then has the new orange number in, but putting my Vodafone sim in it just reports "Unknown".

Can anyone help?

Or.... you could always call or send a message to another phone and see which number it comes from? I can't see where an app would be needed...

The app changes the number on the SIM so that its right in the My Number screen.

It needs to be correct for some applications (the motorola defy tracking/anti-theft website uses it for example)

There is an app for that. "My Phone Number". Also mentioned here.

I tried donloading 'My Phone Number' app, but it said not supported on my phone.

I'm really struggling with downloading any apps to my phone, I thought it was because of the phone not knowing my number so not knowing where exactly they going.

Also I can only get online by wifi and not 3G, that just doesn't seem to work.

Perhaps I should have explained it better last time. Obviously I know my own number, I've had it now for the last 8 years, but thanks for all the replies.

If I can't sort this I'll have to put the Orange sim in, the trouble with that is the coverage where I live is crap for Orange.

Does it make calls ok?

Have you checked the APN settings?

Yeah I can make and take calls OK.

I've installed Swedish Spring RLS5 ROM now and that seems to have sorted out a lot of my problems.

I downloaded 'My Phone Number' app and that has worked, my phone now reports my Vodafone number.

So thanks everyone for the help and suggestions, from one Dozy Cu.. sorry I mean Cozy Dunt.

I had this - you can put the SIM in an old phone (a brick phone) and fiddle around in the settings, somewhere it will let you change it. (I can't remember what the setting was called though when I did it though :/ ).
