How about saying thank you ?

Hi all,

To start off, I would like to say a big thanks to this Forum for allowing us to share this community’s knowledge and to all those budding programmers / developers that has helped me and many others with regard to the Advent / tablets ability to perform more effectively than that of the stock release. I and many others would be sad if we lost the skill-set that’s in this community through lack of gratitude by way of even small donations.

Could I make a suggestion!, I’m a great believer in awarding a donation for excellence, however like may others I suspect, and I might be wrong here, we all have different needs, for me personally it’s not speed I’m looking for, it’s the aesthetics of functionality for every day use, its fantastic to have a little something different to other devices, and we have that from these excellent guys who give up there time for us.

I’m quite happy to keep tying new ROMs, but after a while it’s like, great!!! I have this, but what happened to that if you know what I mean, I find myself resorting back to the original ROM, and adding a few extra’s simply because I’m not qualified or have the talent to write these programs myself, I quite like the idea of Pauls kitchen sort of thing, you take a stock ROM, and if you want the extras you donate a fee, simples.com!.

I believe if this could be implemented and is probably one of the fairest methods to benefit these guys to improve skills by way of funding from usage to help the community in general. I, and I would suspect many others would be prepared to pay a fee similar to that of Pauls ROM to gain access to a VIP area in which all sorts of extras’ from different developers can be found to improve our tablets.

And maybe to make it fair for the developers for different skills in programming, donations would be distributed / shared on the downloads per developer, in that way the more improved or needed development would benefit to the programmers technical skills in a financial way, after all its their time they are spending to improve the device, and in turn the developers community would benefit from polished extras, what do others think!!

I suppose the next hurdle would be how could this be setup?. Again more skills needed.

Cheers

Mike

Hi Mike,

Understand where you are coming from with this idea but rather than having a separate area where only people who contribute additional funds can access the extras I think I'd prefer to have a voluntary mechanism like they do on shareware sites where people who develop apps/tweaks/ROMs offer downloads can also include a 'Donation' button which is purely optional with no fixed value amount. Then if people decide to use it and find it to be beneficial to them they can choose to make a contribution if they so wish.

I've not looked into the mechanics of doing this but I believe Paypal offer a donation mechanism but whether this is just for charitable institutions I don't know.

This facility is already available Corvus, newbe5 etc all have a buy me a beer link at the end of their signatures, so if you want to thank them you can do so.

Hey there! I do kind of like this idea, and it is something I have thought about in the past. However there are some issues. Firstly you would need a web host that was willing to allow developers to directly profit from content posted on their forums. Paul uses these forums as a business and might not take the idea of this too well, and each developer putting up their own site for these purposes would create a lot of fragmentation and make it a lot harder for the everyday users to find all of the information.

The other major issue, and probably the biggest one is that this community by nature borrows, pinches and otherwise pilfers (this is fine, this is pretty much what opensource is all about) content from eachother and all over the Internet, so if you post premium content for a small fee, it won't be long before the same stuff shows up in another rom free of charge, so overall more people will be inclined to use the free alternative other than the small fee the original developer may be asking for.

I like this idea., maybe for premium adding content, such as theme manager themes that you can use on multiple roms, or possibly kernels that can also be used across roms (so that once you pay, you can always use that content on whichever rom you like).

It is a different model, that some devs might like and some might not. Personally I prefer using the old "buy me a beer" option so that people can drop me the odd quid here and there if they feel like it. I make this stuff for the community, not in spite of it
