Thanks to the fact that modern day smartphones are essentially full fledge mobile computers it’s not hard for developers behind popular platforms to push out updates fixing bugs and adding new features. Google has been pretty good about this with the search engine giant announcing today that they will soon be rolling out Android 2.3.4 which adds a native video chat client.

Unfortunately, it’s not up to Google to push the latest builds of Android to any smartphones other than their own (Nexus One & Nexus S) with that instead relying on smartphone manufacturers. This is where the problem comes into effect as many smartphones currently on the market are not running the latest Android ‘Gingerbread’ 2.3 instead lagging behind, many times relying on the dated Android ‘Froyo’ 2.2. Luckily things are picking up a bit with many manufacturers at least making mention of the latest versions of Android.

Sometimes, however, the latest builds of Android leak out giving ambitious consumers the ability to update their phone long before manufacturers actually push out the latest updates. Today this has happened with the Samsung Epic 4G on Sprint as the Android ‘Gingerbread’ 2.3 update has leaked. As with any other unofficial build of Android we’re going to tell you to proceed at your own risk as things may go wrong.
