Guest KACE_231 Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 Unfortunately my dataplan has run out and to avoid excessive costs I have to resort to permenantly using home wifi. The only issue is that when the phone sleeps the wifi disconnects and I have got around this by using an app that prevents the phone from sleeping hence doesnt disconnect wifi. The only issue is that after a while android automatically kills the app, which means the phone will sleep and break the connnection. Is there a way of locking the app into memory?

Wouldn't it be easier to disable mobile data in the wireless and network settings?
Guest KACE_231 Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 Wouldn't it be easier to disable mobile data in the wireless and network settings? Ive done that, but I need some sort of connection to get email + whatsapp messages, push notifciations, and all the other apps that use the internet

You can still use wifi.

Yes that is what I am using, I have an application that keeps the wifi connection alive whilst the screen is off, but the app is forcefully killed by android, therefore I need to keep the app running (not force killed), that is keep it "locked in memory"
Guest shadowninty Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 In with settings you can keep to always on. I do
Guest KACE_231 Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 No one seems to be understanding my issue, just ignore the wifi bit, how do I keep and app locked into memory so that the android OS doesnt automatically kill the process when RAM becomes too low.
Guest wbaw Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 I understand you & have a similar problem, unfortunately I don't have the solution, yet.
Guest KACE_231 Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 I understand you & have a similar problem, unfortunately I don't have the solution, yet. Having said that, it may be the app at fault, because I usually have atleast 150Mb free RAM when I switch of the screen. Does anyone know of a suitable app that will maintain the Wifi Connection even when the screen is off? (I dont care about the impact on the battery) Im currently using CM7 n57
Guest wbaw Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 (edited) I've been using regpon wifi keepalive (search regpon in market), it keeps the wifi connection alive for a while, but i think sometimes it still disconnects if the phone has been totally idle for a fairly long period. I need wifi to be kept alive as long as possible, to receive voip calls, t-mobile seems to block them  Edited May 1, 2011 by wbaw

I need wifi to be kept alive as long as possible, to receive voip calls, t-mobile seems to block them  exactly this is my issue, it seems that after a long while of being idle, even is the app is running, the phone sleeps. I am testing to see if WiFi disconnects due to the signal being out of range now, therefore allowing the phone to sleep
Guest richardop Posted May 2, 2011 Report Posted May 2, 2011 I'm releasing an update to advanced wifi lock soon that should *hopefully* fix this problem, I aim to release the update within a week. How long does it usually take for the system to kill the service/wakelock?

Cant really tell, because I use my phone at random intervals, but I suggest you change the priority of the app so that the system kills it last (something to do with the OOM value)

Definitely something is killing the process or it just doesnt work. When I turned on the screen and turned it off again the phone went to sleep mode straight away. I had to reopen the app to stop it sleeping.

I had to reopen the app to stop it sleeping. I've made it a foreground service (next release), which should mean it gets put to the back of the potential kill list. If the system kills the app, the system should automatically restart the app when more memory is available (tested and works fine on my device). In the next version I have fixed a bug where wifi wasn't getting re-enabled if this happens. When I turned on the screen and turned it off again the phone went to sleep mode straight away. I had to reopen the app to stop it sleeping. That should not be happening, the service should restart automatically. Did you enable wifi before turning the screen off? Next time it does that, can you check if the Advanced wifi lock service is running? (Settings/Applications/Running Services)
Guest Mushroom_Lord Posted May 2, 2011 Report Posted May 2, 2011 Can't you just change your wifi sleep policiy in settings>wireless and networks>wifi>(advanced)?
Guest richardop Posted May 2, 2011 Report Posted May 2, 2011 Can't you just change your wifi sleep policiy in settings>wireless and networks>wifi>(advanced)? That setting has no effect for most (All?) blade users.

(Settings/Applications/Running Services) Yes I enabled Wifi and the Wifi Lock (on your application), but after a long while the phone forces itself into sleep mode. Once in sleep mode, the wifi signal is never going to come back until I wakeup the phone. And if wifi is disconnected your application wont do anything to the OS, right? I will report back next time it sleeps. Also my system always have more than ~200mb free memory, so i dont even see why the OS kills the application Can't you just change your wifi sleep policiy in settings>wireless and networks>wifi>(advanced)? This setting is useless, doesnt work on the Blade, some hardware issue I believe, and yes I have it set to "never" Edited May 2, 2011 by KACE_231

I've also noticed some apps getting killed when I too never really go below 150MB free, one being opera mini. In the stock 2.1 rom it could stay open for days with a page pre-loaded and would open instantly on the cached page. In SS 2.2, after several hours opera gets killed even though I usually have ~200MB free also. From what I understand, the system should only start killing apps when it gets down to something like 24MB (or 50MB) free memory. Edited May 2, 2011 by richardop

After I wake the phone, WiFi quickly and automatically reconnects, but when I turn off the screen again the phone sleeps immediately, only till I reopen your app does it stop sleeping. Also the wierd thing is that my router shows that the phone is connected all the time, but I can only ping the phone when the screen is on or the phone is awake but screen off
Guest richardop Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 (edited) I released version 1.3 of advanced wifi lock, and it should fix this problem. It should be less likely to get killed and if it does get killed while the screen is off it will recover properly and reconnect wifi. Edited May 14, 2011 by richardop
