ZTE Blade GSM/UMTS unlockable?

Hi there,

I'm living in Ontario Canada, and on the Rogers Wireless network. They use GSM 850/1900/2100 Mhz bands (2100Mhz for 3G service) and they also use UMTS 850/1900 Mhz bands (both are 3G service apparently). I'm curious if its possible to change the ZTE Blade's settings or possibly firmware to get on these bands, or if its hardware based and I can't do it at all. The Blade will pick up on the 1900 GSM band occasionally, but the range is horrible... less than 2km from the tower, and it has to be direct line of sight. I'd appreciate any insight into this! Thanks.

It remains to be seen whether upgrading a Gen1 Blade to Gen2 actually adds 850MHz support.

See post 38 in the following thread where fonix232 indicates that one of his phones converted to Gen 2 supports the 850MHz band:

Other people in the thread can't comment on support as the 850MHz band is not used in most countries.

It is now very easy to upgrade to Gen2 (and downgrade back to Gen1 if necessary) using the TPT method:

I guess item NV_BAND_PREF_I in NV-ram has to be changed to ffff (in hex) to unlock all bands.

I've unlocked and updated my phone to GEN2, I'm using CyanogenMod 7 (Android 2.3.3). The range and signal strength has not improved at all. I've tried using multiple apps to tell me which band the phone is getting onto the tower with, but it won't pickup any tower information. Which leads me to believe that 850Mhz is NOT supported.

I was told something interesting last night by Rogers Wireless billing department. The IMEI number of this phone is not supported by their system so they're using a dummy IMEI number apparently, could that be causing problems?

How would I go about accessing the NV-ram to try this? I really want to get this phone working.

boot into ftm mode (after restoring stock recovery), and use QPST
