Guest Posted May 8, 2011 Report Posted May 8, 2011 Hi guys, I'm buying this tomorrow in town. (probably nip into pcworld) I read about two different screens or something and some "double tap" issue? Whatever that is. (can someone explain this to me?) Should I upgrade to the official 1.09 and then get the modaco firmware, or simply go straight to the modaco firmware? Thanks
Guest simonta Posted May 8, 2011 Report Posted May 8, 2011 Forget everything. Install mcr, no need to do 1.09, and run the screen calibration app installed with mcr to avoid double-tapppssss (that's what a double tap looks like ) Unplug the charger before calibrating.

Should I upgrade to the official 1.09 and then get the modaco firmware, or simply go straight to the modaco firmware? Thanks With the first generation there was a number of problems with the screen where when you pressed something it would press it a number of times even though a key was pressed once, this issue was resolved in the newer batches, I bought mine a couple of days ago and so far I havent had this problem, the only problem that remains is that when the stock charger is plugged in thats when the screen gets unstable As for the rom, out of the box it will come with the latest and greatest advent vega update (1.10) so you shouldnt need to upgrade as for whether you should use the modaco rom I would say no its outdated and the corvus 5 rom is a lot better or if you want the latest and greatest android experience then go for cyanogenmod 7. I personally tried both and found that the cm7 rom gave me a lot of features I like and fixed some of my gripes that I had with the corvus rom including how the notification bar is still visible in fullscreen apps, quick access to toggles like wifi, bluetooth, etc but there is a number of downsides and bugs that I have found including where the cursor is not displaying on the screen while a usb mouse is connected, cant take screenshots, cant control the device using vnc and the performance has decreased slightly Edited May 8, 2011 by Richard_Arkless
Guest Panayioti Posted May 8, 2011 Report Posted May 8, 2011 Went to pc world today and the firmware was 1.9 and also there's a app in the android market which let's you take screenshots by shaking the vega and it works really good.

Guest warriorscot Posted May 8, 2011 Report Posted May 8, 2011 That would be an interesting app especially since all the others used a bug that had been patched in the vega. At this point in time CM7 is in a condition where it can be used as a main ROM, its not without niggles but nothing that cant be lived with and it does add lots of nice features to the table. Since it has official nightlies you can also get the latest and greatest of CM7 every day.
Guest Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 Right, so Cyanogenmod 7 is the best firmware to use? (no stable available that I can find) But unlike the Modaco one you can't get the google apps right? Do I have to hunt them down or something? Bought the vega and messing with it now.
Guest yetirider Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 For my first vega moment I used Modaco R8, with Launcher Pro, Dolphin HD browser, with Honeycomb background. Works really well and stable. Cheers Phil

Guest Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 google apps  http://goo-inside.me/gapps/ So, how do I install CM7? Do I have to root it as described here? Or should I be doing something like what is mentioned with the modaco thing where I enable usb debugging etc?

Bought the vega and messing with it now. cm7 now comes with the option to download the latest gapps zip file just tick the box. however a word of caution about cm7 it has some niggles that depending on what you want to use it for may make corvus5 a better option ( forget the status bar thing that richard was talking about as that is just a setting in the launcher ). i switched from corvus5 to cm7 and will stay until corvus and newbe5 release the sp1 they have been talking about as i dont want to keep flashing and re instating various apps. an example of one of the things i have found using cm7 is that video players struggle to play or dont play in some cases, the hd videos i made personally which never happened with Corvus, however one of the things they have got working is the vega now seems able to find itself ( i.e its location on weather apps and google skymap) which i havent found with any other rom, and as Warriorscot rightly says it is more than capable for day to day useage now with no perceptable lag. Whichever you choose they are all easy to switch to just remember the cardinal rule, always make a backup in cwm first and back up all apps and data with titanium or similar product. have fun  let us know which one you decide to stick with

I've definitely experienced this double tap issue, annoying as hell.

Guest warriorscot Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 (edited) To install any rom you need clockwork mod, there is two ways to install it now. The traditional adb route which means you need the special adb usb drivers or adbwireless on your device or using rom manager. Easiest is probably rom manager it works fine on the the vega now. However all the instructions are in the pinned clockwork topic on here. It is worth download the R8 from here just because it has adb packaged in it and the drivers so its useful that way. But once you have clockwork mod and rom manager installed it is very easy to install new roms and backup your device. CM7 does have some video issues still although it does play some filetypes corvus and the other 2.2 roms don't but easiest way around that is to use rockplayer to watch videos. No stable at the moment it probably won't get one it does have nightlies which are themselves stable enough for use. I have flashed every new nightly and they have improved significantly each time. I would say its definately worth using as its got most of the kinks worked out I would start with it and if it gives you problems switch back to corvus or the R8 for a while until its sorted or had a few more nightly releases. If you aren't already you should also join XDA its a big android developer forum a lot of the cools apps and roms are free to members. Edited May 9, 2011 by warriorscot

So, is it just best to go with this and from there install CM7? I haven't seen any description of what adb even is, I'm assuming maybe it's the android sdk? EDIT: Ok, I got it. Just a bit poorly worded about the driver is included with the r8 download. It's doing its thing now. Edited May 9, 2011 by Guest
Guest warriorscot Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 That works pretty well its usually where I start if I have to go from scratch, if you just want to install clockwork(CWM) on its own just follow these instructions and it will get you sorted. But its a lot easier now than it used to be to do install roms the R8 install method is probably a little outdated now that rom manager is vega compatible.

I was looking through the apps and saw "Recovery" pressed on it, device rebooted and it is stuck at an image on the screen with a box and an arrow pointing to the green android image. EDIT: Powered it off then back on. And back to working. Edited May 9, 2011 by Guest

EDIT: Powered it off then back on. And back to working. Right, so installed rom manager. The first option is "flash clockworkmod recovery", I assume it is a good idea to run that so I can then put CM7 on?
