Dell Streak - new owner

Hi - I am new to the Dell streak having moved over from the excellent HTC Desire.

Although there are aspects of the Dell that are not as well sorted as the HTC, it suits my purpose better. I guess there are two questions I have:

Firstly, I like the idea of the Dell 'stage widgets' but they seem limited. It looks as though I have to use the presets (email, social, home...) and don't have the option to add my own (games, news...). Is this the case or does any one know how a way around this?

Secondly, I see a lot of posts about rooting the Dell and replacing the firmware with something better - or words to that effect. So - what are the benefits of doing this? Is there very much wrong with the system as it stands?
