Video player update in modaco rom?

Hello,

Using stock firmware the built-in video player is only capable of playing high definition video files that were encoded with level 3 h264 (=> worthless, no files "on the internet" are encoded this way).

However using pauls rom (fr15) I'm able to playback level 4.1 ("common") high def files with stuttering.

(An example would be https://rapidshare.com/files/461590398/sample.mp4 )

Now I also happen to know that a friend of mine, using htc desire hd (gingerbread) is able to play these files _without_ stutter.

Paul, what did you change in your roms to make hd material play back at all? There were some mention of newer nvidia files in fr10, is that it? And would it be possible to tweak that thing a little bit further, since I believe the o2x should probably be able to play files the desire hd can play.

(ALSO, rockplayer et. al that uses software-only decoding stutters a lot more before anyone suggest using that)

thanks for any response

without being an expert in these matters, i have an advent vega (same tegra 2 chip) and people who know alot more than me on these things say that the tegra 2 chip that is in the vega and o2x, cannot play mkv files, as its a limitation of the tegra (apparently the one found on the xoom, transformer etc is different and can play these files) ON the vega ive always been able to get them to play, they just stutter, or they play but with no sound (might of been rockplayer that one) i havnt tried playing and hd stuff on the o2x as well the screen is only 4inchs, its really not worth wasting the extra space, but thats just my opinion.

Regarding the mkv thing, I have no problems with repacking anything from mkv to mp4 as long as i dont have to reencode the entire video, so that's not really an issue. The screen might not be big, but it has hdmi-out. (And also being able to play the same files as on the computer is a good thing regardless)

DHD, NEXUS S, GALLAXY S

they are using a CPU supporting NEON instruction set.

that's why they can software decode on RockPlayer better.

For tegra 2 devices, NEON is optional. O2x don't have.

and there isn't any software specially optimized for them yet as I know.

Give MOBOPLAYER a try, as they claim they would support tegra2.

Rockplayer has hardware tegra2 support for ages. Moboplayer seems nicer though and it seems to be free with no ads and banners. Seems very quick. Didn't want to open any 720p mkvs over DLNA, though!

This thread is worth watching since it would be a killer feature to get decent .mkvs working on our phone... !

I'm not after software decoders (and I don't think neon helps much in this case, since hd videos lag on dhd as well if using software decoders).

I'm asking what changed between stock and the modaco roms regarding hardware playback since the custom rom supports more formats.

Would like to get video to play smoothly too. Tried that bundled video clips from nVidia - and they played well with ~10k bitrate. Tested two different 720p MKV files with a video bitrate of 4~6k, and they both ran in slowmotion :-(...

really wondering if NEON can really make such a big difference. such a shame it doesnt play 720p mkvs!

If only we could get a player that used the GPU, then we atleast could play 720p. Maybe even some 1080p could work, but most internet releases probably have to high bitrate for the tegra SoC. I'm hoping the SGS2 with tegra (i9103?) also can play mkv without problems, like the one with samsungs own SoC (i9100), becouse then maybe we can use that player on our O2X.

tegra2 should be able to play 4.1 in hardware. mkv is container - nothing else. if o2x will not have that, i don't see the point integrating 1080p hdmi into that phone! but will we have it in rom or maybe standalone player with hdmi out support - doesn't really matters to me.
