Guest ValiantSaint Posted May 10, 2011 Report Posted May 10, 2011 (edited) Hi everyone, I've just picked up my OSF, and I'm itching to get it up to speed with a good ROM. What's the best one at the moment? (speed and reliablity) And how do I go about getting it on the phone? (I'm sorry for asking a daft question, and I have seen there's stickies around, but I thought if it everything could be put into a single, concise thread, it might help other noobs like me, cheers) I have read about people overclocking their OSFs. Is this a hard task? And where's the best place to pick up a case/sleeve and screen protectors in the UK for the OSF? Many thanks in advance : ) Edited May 10, 2011 by ValiantSaint

Swedish spring is a bit more stable, but lacks the features and app performance of CM7, also it's 2.2. Edited May 10, 2011 by Fou-lu
Guest Amphoras Posted May 10, 2011 Report Posted May 10, 2011 If you decide to go with CM7, its really easy to overclock it. Just go to Settings, CyanogenMod settings, Performance, CPU settings, then you can set the min/max CPU frequency. Start off just overclocking it a little bit, do some CPU intensive stuff and leave it on that for a while. If everything's ok, you can try a little higher. If you go too high, it will either freeze then reboot instantly (if you go a lot too high), or reboot when doing something CPU intensive later on (if its only a little bit too high). As long as you don't tick "Set on Boot" until you're sure the speed is stable, you shouldn't be able to break anything completely.
Guest cmberry20 Posted May 10, 2011 Report Posted May 10, 2011 (edited) sorry to high jack the thread a bit but i've been away from the custom ROM scene for a while. Currently got FLB R6 & i'm very happy with it - stable, fast & good battery (managed 3 days on one charge last week!!) When i 'left' the scene CM7 was ok but had lots of bugs. How is it now? Is it better than FLB? Also, whats this GEN2 business. I've read somewhere if you upgrade the phone to GEN2 it stops you going back to GEN1 ROMs (eg. FLB) is this right? BTW, I've got 1st GEN Blade - OLED, old style Root etc. Got it the day they came out!! Edited May 10, 2011 by cmberry20

By far the best froyo Rom :) Cm7 is good for me, only really has one bug in my case, which is fixed by a reboot (things not drawing on the screen properly) And the only other issues are battery life, and the fact menu scrolling is slower than in 2.2. But, much faster gaming and more features! :P

(Sorry, bit new at this) What's the best way of getting everything off of the phone (Orange crud etc.) and then getting the CM7 N67 ROM on there, without mucking the phone up? And can I just say thanks to everyone for being so welcoming and helpful : )

And I think a search for "de-brand" (or maybe without the hyphon  ) will bring up a guide. But honestly. The Blade was my first android phone and I flashed it without anyone else even knowing this at the age of thirteen, following Steven harpers guide. It really is that easy and wont mess up your blade.
Guest Anil k Solanki Posted May 10, 2011 Report Posted May 10, 2011 (edited) My vote and experience goes to Swedish Spring RLS5, with the Gingerbread theme pack for that baked in goodness. Cyanogen is a great pursuit, but for us mere mortals, we need a phone that is 99.5% working. With Swedish Spring you get just that, I have had zero issues. CM7 gets better and better, and is fun but not fun when the problems crop up, and they will. Regards, Anil. Edited May 11, 2011 by Anil k Solanki

Fou-lu provided me a link, I have got the update [recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen2-update_signed.zip], but how do I apply the update? latest update(not 68) fixed almost everything on CM7 except accelerometer lag  In your signature it says your on GEN1 so don't try update recovery past 3.0.2.4, there all for GEN2, update.zip is the old way, to update clockwork just boot into clockwork and install from SD the 3.0.2.4 GEN1 zip if you plan updating past 3.0.1.4.
Guest mk89 Posted May 10, 2011 Report Posted May 10, 2011 Now with SS RLS5 and i'am happy with it, CM7 stable was ok but those random reboots made me crazy, and at the point when after charging ur photo to 100% it turns off made me mad and i tpt to gen2 and flashed SS RLS5. It has mutch better battery life without even doing calibration and for shure more stable, so if u want battery life and stable ROM go for SS RLS5 if u are ok with random reboots and not stable ROM go for CM7
Guest Anil k Solanki Posted May 10, 2011 Report Posted May 10, 2011 Thanks Fou-lu, I am too baby/scared to go to Gen 2. Would I have to start all over again and reload apps and personalizations? Sorry to the author of this thread I didn't mean to hijack it. Anil.
Guest ValiantSaint Posted May 10, 2011 Report Posted May 10, 2011 Thanks again. What's all this "Gen2" talk about? (Sorry, another stupid question!) As my phone is new, will it be "GEN2" already? (Or is this to do with the ROMS?)
Guest Anil k Solanki Posted May 10, 2011 Report Posted May 10, 2011 (edited) Hi Valiant, Gen 1 and Gen 2 handsets are identical except they have the internal memory partitioned in two different layouts. 95% of ROMs work on Gen1 layouts, some newer ROMs like Cyanogen RUN only on Gen 2, Swedish Springs runs on both. An app called Mr. Pigfish available from the Marketplace will tell you if you have a Gen1 or 2 handset. Do a search in this forum and you will find great articles outlining the pro's and cons of Gen 1/2. Anil. PS. Clockwork Recovery above 3.0.2.4 only runs on Gen 2. So 3.0.2.4 Is the last recovery for Gen 1. Edited May 11, 2011 by Anil k Solanki

Sorry to the author of this thread I didn't mean to hijack it. Anil. yeah, everything gotta be set up again if you convert, but main reason to convert is for CM7 so just stick with SS and GEN1 if your happy with it  @mk Non existent on latest nightlys, since 2.3.4 those bugs are gone. Guest glossywhite Posted May 10, 2011 Report Posted May 10, 2011 Swedish Spring RLS5 is infinitely more reliable than any CM7 rom, no matter what they tell you.

Guest scotchmizzed Posted May 10, 2011 Report Posted May 10, 2011 Had both Swedish spring and CM7 and tried for a while a found the SS more responsive faster and zero bugs so vote for me goes to Swedish Spring..

Many thanks in advance : ) my suggestion is that new users go with a stable ROM like FLB or SS. CM7 looks the place to be soon, but for the moment a new user will find it challenging to cope with a ROM that is still in very active development. They have a lot to learn about the device and gain confidence in the upgrading process. To do all that at the same time as understand the quirks of CM7 is not clever.
Guest ValiantSaint Posted May 10, 2011 Report Posted May 10, 2011 Thanks again, people : ) Can I install Mr. Pigfish without having a SIM in the phone? Can it be installed to my PC, then transfered over to the SF? Cheers : )

Can it be installed to my PC, then transfered over to the SF? Cheers : ) Mr. Pigfish is an app which you can get from the Marketplace, it's the simplest way of getting the app onto your handset. I don't know but I don't see why you can't use the "smart" bit of your phone without a SIM. Do you have access to the internet via Wi-Fi? If so that's the easiest way. Anil.
Guest eMarcus Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 My vote and experience goes to Swedish Spring RLS5, with the Gingerbread theme pack for that baked in goodness. How do I install the Gingerbread theme pack? Thanks, bye Marcus.
Guest ValiantSaint Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 Thanks again for all your help, people. I'll try and get on with "modding" my SF now without asking too many questions : )
Guest Fou-lu Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 How do I install the Gingerbread theme pack? Thanks, bye Marcus. Boot into clockwork and install from there, if your on SS.
Guest ValiantSaint Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 (edited) Er, sorry to come back and ask some stupid questions, but just where do I start with this whole "modding" thing? Should I install Mr. Pigfish and go from there? Do I need to remove all of my Orange apps before I think about another ROM? Cheers : ) Edited May 11, 2011 by ValiantSaint
