Old blade backup not working in new blade

Don't hate me when I tell you I managed to smash my previous blade so well that even replacing the digitalizer was pointless....so I ordered a new one and made a backup using the side buttons on trusty Clockwork.

The only problem is for some reason or other it won't let me load the backup on my new blade, images went blue and then the charging light flashed red.

I'm sure there is a valid reason....but I'm more interested in a solution as it would be nice to get all my contacts and user data back.

Was your old phone an OLED screen and the new one an LCD screen.

There was different roms for different versions of phone. It sounds to me like your trying to restore an OLED backup to a new LCD type.

If your worried about your contacts they should all restore to the phone from google on any new rom you set up.

It could be the case as I am not sure what the new or old screens were....so how would i restore all my user data with a different rom?

I am doubtful it is a screen issue; So,

1) Are both your blades the same Gen?

2) What ROM were you trying to back up?

3) What version of recovery did you backup/restore with?

There are a few more things we may need to know depending what the issue is...just trying to get the ball rolling

I know its hard, but we need as much info as possible to help us help you :)

He says images went blue.. I've seen this many a time when LCD's came out and people were flashing OLED roms to them. THis is why I think it's screen related.

1. My new phone is Gen1 and I am not sure about my old phone althought when i did it last i don't think i had to worry about Gens.

2. I was trying to restore a 2.2 rom relatively old, my documents say I downloaded it on the 28/10/2010....it was a very popular rom (had a modaco man on boot up).

3. Previous Blade I was using v2.5.0.9 and the new one I am using 3.0.1.4

Ok. With that date you are using I am now willing to put money on it that you was using an OLED only rom.

Your new phone is going to be LCD and will require a new rom. Use the newest Swedish Spring rom for the time being until Cyanogen gets a little bit more stable.

If you had a google account set up on the phone before and you had sync turned on then all your contacts will restore on their own as soon as you sign into your google account on the new rom.

Unfortunately I wouldn't advise trying to get your SMS back but for future check out "Backup to gmail" Here. or a similar app that will back them up elsewhere for you.

Then aye, 'tis a screen issue.

As @flumpster said: the old ROM's didn't used to work when the TFT model came out..

I had assumed you were on a later Rom

Then it complicates things....

Really, you haven't got much luck. Data from that ROM will most likely only work on later versions of MCR (or not) And-there have since been much better ROMS. Its best to just start again.

BUT: if you REALLY want to...

You could try to remove data from your previous backup and then restore it by plaving it appropriately in the backup folder on the sd card.

Maybe look at advanced restore first, see if it allows you to restore data only

Now Sadly, you can't do this now:

1) contacts are easy, you can either sync them with your google account or export them to the sd card and restore them in your new ROM (hit menu whilst you open the contacts app)

2) apps and data can be restored with titanium backup...

The problem is the contacts were set to upload to gmail but never did get uploaded (don't ask me why)...so they are not on neither the SD card or the SIM but on the phone itself....so i need to access the ROM to recover them.

There has to be a way.

P.S. Am currently on the swedish ROM

Does anybody know where in the phone that the contacts would be stored?

Genius here. Lol

data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/contacts2.db

How can I retrieve them and put them in my new blade?

How many contacts are you trying to retrieve and do you have them written somewhere else to re-enter them ?

I could tell you how to use unyaffs to extract the data.img in your backup and get the database file and I can even upload the files you need to do it but even after you get the database from the old backup I'm still not convinced it's gonna be compatible with the new rom.

So that would then leave you with a database file which you would need to extract the info from and your gonna need an SQL environment to do it (which I doubt you have)

This is why I ask how many you got. If it's not many it's not worth the hassle.

I have all my contacts stored in it, over 100 I would imagine and I do not have these backed up anywhere else (as I imagined gmail was doing this for me).

You are right about me not having an SQL environment...

I have an idea of how to retrieve them but I would need somebody with an OLED screen who is willing to help me out?

Upload my ROM, restore it on the OLED device and then upload to a random gmail account which I can then connect to and retrieve.

Put your backup on your pc.

Find the data.img

Extract it

and as @flumpster said:

data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/contacts2.db

that contains all your contacts.

Now install your new rom or whatever...(go with mcr12 for now)

gain root access

And push the file (the contacts2.db) to the same location on your phone. (use adb or a root explorer)

Now look in contacts and see if it worked.

if not try a reboot and try again...

I would have restored your system for you but I am now on Gen2 and would have to revert to Gen1 to do it.

I have another idea. I have uploaded a zip file for you Here.

Download it and extract the folder. Put the data.img file into the same folder and then run the "RunThis.bat" that I put in there for you.

This will then extract the data.img to the same folder.

Get the file data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/contacts2.db and either upload it and I'm sure one of us will help out and try and recover them of you can email it to me if you don't feel safe.

Once you have that file you can always just try what Mushroom Lord suggested and overwrite yours with rootexplorer (you never know.. the tables might be compatible) but make sure you make a backup of the Rom first in case it doesn't work.

Thanks a lot, managed to get hold of the contacts2.db easily with your bat....tried popping it in with root explorer but there is no /databases folder on this one only a /files folder.

Had a look inside the database with internal viewer and can see my contact names  and how the last time i have seen them etc.

Where do we go from here? I am more than happy to upload it for you if you think it would be easiest.

I really appreciate your time and help, thank you.

I'm in bed at mo and wont be at PC till tomorrow afternoon.

I just sent you a private message with my email address in it to send the file to.

It might help me if I had build.prop also to know exactly what version you was on but I'll tell you how to get that tomorrow if I need it.

Gonna try and push it into the emulator first and do a backup to SD option if they show.

Just had another idea if you don't mind typing them back into gmail.

You know you said earlier that you had rootexplorer and you looked inside the database with the internal viewer. Well when you first enter the database scroll down to the bottom and select "view_v1_people" this will then show you the peoples names and if you scroll all the way to the right on the name you will see the phone number for them.

It's another option
