2 options for 3G video streaming from home PC

This requires tethering your Vega to a suitable device, I'm using a Desire HD as a hotspot. (annoyingly I was going to test both of these further today, but left the damn Vega at home!!!)

OPTION 1

Running gmote.

Install gmote server as per instructions on your home PC. Set up the shares & password. Open your router settings, open up port 8889 for your PCs IP address (run ipconfig if you don't know it). Go to WhatsMyIP and determine your external IP address - note it down.

That's the PC end sorted.

Tether your Vega to whatever device you are using for the 3G connection. Now install gmote on your Vega. Open it up, and hit browse - you can then manually add in a server. Enter the external IP for your home PC. Enter password.

You should now be able to view/play files that your Vega is happy with.

OPTION 2

Running TVersity

Install tversity on home PC. Set up the library (& password? can't recall on this step actually, sorry, it might have just run from the PC username password combo, I always set the same anyway). Go to configuration, and you can tweak the various settings in there dependant on your 3G signal - I've just set upper limits on video size.

Open your router settings, open up port 41952 for your PCs IP address (run ipconfig if you don't know it). Go to WhatsMyIP and determine your external IP address - note it down.

Tether your Vega to whatever device you are using for the 3G connection. Now go to http:YOUREXTERNALIPADDRESS:41952/flashlib/ Use http:YOUREXTERNALIPADDRESS:41952/lib/ instead, works brilliantly. You will need to enter your login details.

If you press on the media, you will get a transcoded (crappy!) flash version, which looks very poor. Instead, rub your finger (!) around the top left of the screen, 4 panels pop up - press the one that looks like a folder, hit download original file. You can then stream immediately. Sometimes the folder is in the description (seemingly after you've hit it once?) so you can just press from there.

You should now have access to all your files to stream directly - I'm using Moboplayer - works A1 and is free.

Anyway, Gmote seems to be the better option (scrolls nicely, etc), though I thought I'd include the TVersity for anyone who already uses it. I also got the feeling last night that the TVersity option may allow for proper download when the files aren't compatible? Tveristy set up has no stutter, nothing, now, perfect!

Net result - I can now sit at work and watch basically all SD material I have stored at home, result!

Next step, try and find an HD solution.... Tversity can transcode on the fly, had a 1080p copy of 300 working earlier, though a bit sketchy, need to work on settings for that

(for what its worth, I first tried using PLEX - I thought it was very promising, lovely fancy pants interface, pulling up media info, etc, but sweet jesus the quality was pathetic)

EDITED: Just realised better Tversity settings, duh!

What settings are you using for TVersity?

I have a similar setup where TVersity streams to the uPnP app on the Vega but I cant quite get the Tversity transcode settings quite right for 1080p stuff.

I've just been playing with settings, and not got anywhere with the 1080p stuff... looking at tversity, it is simply streaming, rather than transcoding?? I set some daft low max resolutions to test this - 160 x 90 - still coming through at a high res.

Need to investigate further when I get home (just making changes via logmein at the minute..), but will report, as I am planning to use this a fair bit !

In fact, is it transcoding at all for you - in the status window?

Been trying some more things - uninstalled, re-install, etc - no disco - it is just streaming the full file, no transcode. Weird...

Oh well, better do some work for now !!!

Right, have come to the conclusion that for now, bollocks to HD stuff via 3G...!!!!

Having uninstalled/re-installed TVersity a few times, along with various codec packs, I finally managed to get it to transcode when using the different preset setttings (xbox, wmv, etc). On autodetect, it just ignores every override for some daft reason. Net result, there's a few settings that work, but pull the resolution down way too low.

Close to 4hrs pissing about going in circles, lol!

There does seem to be the option of setting up the profiles.xml - but looking in there, the xbox profile has the right max size - 1920 x 1080 - however, when set to xbox in the settings, I was getting files that were ~370 x 150 - which just looked pants....

So I'm leaving it as is, and am off to bed. Got a full 3.5hrs kip to look forward to know... bah!

(for what its worth, I still think that the standard mode is perfect for SD, seems to stream it more consistently than gmote did)
