Guest bencallis Posted May 13, 2011 Report Posted May 13, 2011 I am looking to get my first android tablet and it seems currently that the Vega is still the cheapest usable tablet. It is clear that this year there is going to be a rush of tablets coming out but as of yet I have not seen anything which looks to take on the vega in terms of specifications and cost. It is fantastic that Honeycomb is currently in alpha and this is one of the key reasons why I am considering this tablet. I know the main weakness of the tablet is the viewing angles although I have also heard that the later version of the tablet have better screens. Is this actually true? The resolution of the tablet also seems a drawback as most future tablets now seem to be going with 1280x800 which may leave the advent behind in terms of app support and also in screen real-estate with the honeycomb bar. In real world use how well does the battery hold up? Finally if you were to buy a tablet at this point in time would it be the Vega or would you hold out for something in the pipeline?
Guest Jisonga Posted May 13, 2011 Report Posted May 13, 2011 If I was about to buy a tablet today I would be even more sure of buying a Vega. One is that I am still as skint as I was when I first looked buying a tablet and its the only one under £250 that has a more than decent spec for running android and its apps. Two the massive dev community behind the Vega is very impressive and there seems no end to the talent and will to over come any technical challenge. Third is that this tablet is one of the very few out there that has the whole suite of android operating systems to play with. There's 2.2, 2.3 and now 3.0. If you can beat all that for less your a better man than me. As for the screen when using it one on one it's more than fine and can't really say its caused me any problems or stopped my from enjoying my Vega at all. As course that's just my take on things. Jason.

Jason. its tough, the asus transformer is the one that might sway me. Its the better tablet, but then again its 379. compared to 199 for the vega. if the vega was 250, i think it would be worth getting the asus. Since its at 199, i think the vega would still swing it for me. But its close, its hard to compare as the vega loses, the asus is better, but its not 179pound better is the thing you have to decide.

The Asus is as big as a Vega but as expensive as an ipad2 but thicker and heavier. For me the only real alternative will be one of the new Samsung tabs due out in June. The 10" one is thinner and lighter than the ipad2 and also samsung promise it will be cheaper than the ipad2. If I could afford one I would get that but as it is tablets are luxury items that are nice to have but no one actually needs and as such £200 is the most I would ever pay for one, so the Vega is the only real option for me.
Guest gadgetshop Posted May 13, 2011 Report Posted May 13, 2011 Having bought my Vega about 3 weeks ago I honestly can't fault it, for the money its perfect for what I need. To be honest I originally bought it because of finances at the time to sell on and upgrade to a Asus/xoom or similar at a later date but don't think I'll be doing that now. Glad I bought one and wouldn't change it for anything
Guest Shaizer Posted May 13, 2011 Report Posted May 13, 2011 In my honest opinion and after playing with a few other honeycomb tablets in PC world today, I would put the extra investment up and buy an Asus Eee pad transformer. It's superior to the Vega (as much as I love it) in every way, especially when it comes to screen quality. My God the screen on the transformer is gorgeous. I totally hate UK gadget prices compared to the US, the transformer costs £380 at PCworld (maybe can go as far as £350 on ebay) but you can order from America for $399 plus shipping which would be around $50 which converts to around £280 but the US is having big stock problems with the transformer. Ah I feel I've made this reply a bit too anti-vega but I honestly do love my vega and tinkering with it etc. but to a new buyer I would highly recommend the transformer.

For some people it will be worth the price, for others it wont. My advice is to go into pcworld and check the vega screen out, if you think its acceptable, then order it online for 199 (229 in store) if you think actually those viewing angles are bad, and am gunner hate using it, pump for the better machine. No one can argue the transformer is better, the question is, is it 180 pounds better?
Guest liamb1234 Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 Personally i think the vega is a tablet really worth having, especially as its such a low price. One of the reasons i bought the vega was because of the mod ability of it, and the brilliant community behind it, the screen viewing angle is a bit of a bummer but other than that i cant fault it. I cant comment on any of the asus tablets but ive heard somewhere on here that they would rather have an ipad for the extra cash, sorry but thats a definite no no!!!
Guest bencallis Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 Thanks for all your replies. In real world use how is the battery life?
