Can't root? or get into recovery?

Hi, just got a brand new san fran gen 1 phoine from orange, iv unlocked it to any network but i cant seem to get a custome rom onto it, iv tried about 4 or 5 differnt ways of rooting, each one says its rooted the phone but when i come to do somthing that involves the phone been rooted it says it not, also i cant get into recovery mode (hold upat power up) just loads the standard orange rom? Any help please.

You won't get into recovery untill you flash one. Download ROM Manager from the market. In the app, there's an option 'flash recovery'. When its done reboot your phone volume DOWN hold.
