Guest Tippon Posted May 15, 2011 Report Posted May 15, 2011 Got the starting fastboot usb download protocol error yesterday, and have spent half the night trying to get the Vega to work again. I've managed to get it to boot into recovery mode and Windows makes the new USB noise, but it doesn't seem to be letting me install the right drivers, and doesn't show up under Device Manager. I'm running Windows XP SP3, and the only device that shows up is the NVIDIA USB Boot-recovery driver for Mobile devices. I've uninstalled and reinstalled using different drivers, in case I had the wrong one, but this is the only driver that seems to be related to the Vega. I've tried Cwmdu86's suggestion here but I just get a 'waiting for device' message, then nothing else, and I've made sure I'm following the steps here too  Anyone got any ideas?

Have you tried the Audi tool? It fixed the windows driver for me and allowed me to flash a stock ROM. Also don't forget to try totally switching off your computer (including disconnecting the power lead) for 5 minutes before trying to reconnect. Edited May 15, 2011 by Yogimax
Guest trevor432990 Posted May 15, 2011 Report Posted May 15, 2011 (edited) Can you explain what kernel/ROM level you were on 'before' the problem and what you are trying to achieve? Do you want to recover the device to where you were before or do you want to reflash it and possibly lose all the apps and data you have installed already? Edited May 15, 2011 by trevor432990
Guest Tippon Posted May 15, 2011 Report Posted May 15, 2011 Haven't tried the Audi tool, because I don't know what it is! :) Have you got a link please? I was running the R8 ROM before this happened, and would ideally like to recover the device to do a backup, but there's nothing vital on it that can't be restored if that's not possible

Guest Tippon Posted May 15, 2011 Report Posted May 15, 2011 (edited) A very quick forum search gave me http://android.modaco.com/content/advent-v...iver-installer/ As has been said many times - search is your friend Thanks :) I tried searching, but it brought up Audi car tools - I did a Google search rather than a forum search by mistake  Playing with the AUDI tool now to see if it helps :P EDIT: The AUDI tool confirms that the Vega is connected and in recovery mode, but using the fastboot command still just gives me the waiting for device message. Looks like I'm gonna have to re-flash and hope that does it ;) Edited May 15, 2011 by Tippon
Guest Tippon Posted May 15, 2011 Report Posted May 15, 2011 Tried using Vega Tools to re-flash to the official Vega 1.09 ROM, but two hours later, it's still sitting there with a DOS prompt saying that Nvflash has started, but nothing else  Nothing seems to be communicating with the Vega, apart from detecting that it's there initially :)
Guest Tippon Posted May 15, 2011 Report Posted May 15, 2011 Sorry for the multiple posts, but I've now tried this on two computers running XP SP3, and under Linux (PinguyOS, an Ubuntu variant), and other than detecting the fact that the NVIDIA USB Boot-recovery driver for Mobile devices is installed and present, there doesn't seem to be any other communication happening. I can't even get the Vega to boot to anything other than recovery mode now. At least, I think it's recovery mode, as nothing happens  Anyone got any ideas on what to do next?
Guest simonta Posted May 15, 2011 Report Posted May 15, 2011 Try running the update directly instead of via Vega Tools. If the driver is installed correctly, then the Vega is communicating with the PC.
Guest Tippon Posted May 15, 2011 Report Posted May 15, 2011 That's odd. It didn't work earlier, so I tried it again to check if there was an error message, and it's running ok? Kind of annoying, because I would have tried the fastboot method again to save my settings, but at least it's working. I just wish I knew why :) Thanks for the help, and for the brilliant AUDI tool :P
