1) APX Mode is -always in USB slave. You're not stuck in host

2) If your VEGA won't come on without the power cable? It's likely low on battery - leave it to charge for a while

3) If two doesn't apply, then there's a more serious problem - it should come on without a powercable!

4) When trying to get into APX mode, ensure the power cable is plugged in

5) If will connect to the PC if all is done correctly

Optional (Not for faint hearted?):

6) If you want to not have to fuss with timings so much...

7) Rename the stock installer from .exe to .rar

8) Extract it

9) Go into the extracted folder

10) Add the -w flag to the nvflash command in lvds.bat

11) Now, run the lvds.bat batch file

12) -w will add "wait" to the nvflash invocation

13) This means it will wait until it finds you're devcie - so you can keep trying to plug it in until it runs ^^

The backlight doesn't come on when in APX mode *shrugs*, no real explanation for it, it just doesn't. It wasn't programmed to.

As for the -w flag :

Rename .rar,

Extract

Put the attachment in the folder with all the images.

Rename it to a .bat file (I can't upload them)

And run it

It should then open up a command prompt and wait for your device to be inserted in APX mode
