Auto-rotation not working. Want to test accelerometer sensor...

Hi,

Just got my first Android phone yesterday, and I noticed that the auto-rotation is not working on anything. I know that this has been raised in a couple of other threads already, but I've gone through alot of what people has been suggested without any success. So far, I have tried various 2.2 ROMs, and went back to the Stock Orange ROM and that did not help either. I've tried a few apps (like Google Sky Map and Compass) to see if it did anything. No luck. At this point I'm wondering if I got a phone with a faulty accelerometer sensor. I have a Gen1 device.

Does anyone know of any tools to test if the hardware if functioning?

Thanks for anyone that can help, and for all the other people that have provided valuable information to get me to this point.

There is an auto rotate option in: settings>display

just make sure thats on. Which i'm pretty sure it is.

Some ROMS (CM7 comes to mind) (okay, maybe only CM7) have bugs where the acceleromiter doesn't want to work: but I think this is only in some Cm7 nightlies, which I don't think you have used, so you can ignore this comment.

Unless anyone else has other Ideas I'm guessing this is a faulty handset.

Try the app Elixir it allows you too test all your sensors.

@Mushroom_Lord - I have checked the setting you mentioned, but it makes no difference. I've tried CM7 and it didn't work with that ROM, the Stock Orange, Japanese Jellyfish, Swedish Spring.

@ColdEmbrace - Thanks for the heads-up about Elixir...Can you tell me what the sensor readings on Elixir should look like (if your auto-rotation is working correctly)?

I have a report from Elixir, but don't know what part of if might be relevant to diagnosing the problem. I turn things on under the sensors tab, but they go back to being off if i navigate away from the page and come back. Not sure if this is normal, but the auto-rotation never works.

Any other help is much appreciated.

Unfortunately I think I got a faulty handset. I tested out a few sensor diagnostic tools recommended by the community and none gave me any accelerometer reading.

I went into Orange this morning and they agreed to send me out a replacement. Thanks to all that tried to help. Fingers crossed that the replacement will be fine.

Got the replacement today. Auto-rotate works in stock ROM. Upgraded to 2.2 Rom and still works. Excited to really play around with the phone now.
