Guest skybooks Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 I cannot download any files to my phone via the browser from file hosting sites. I have tried all the browsers, stock, opera, boat, dolphin etc. I am reffering to large rar files from rapidshare. It just says Untitled. downloading, but the download never starts. When using filesonic.com it works, but the files are renamed to *.htm. Opera does have the full filename with rapidshare, but it doesnt actually start downloading. Any advice? BTW a recommendation for a really unique browser is Boat Browser. The page switcher is brilliant. It is so easy to deal with sites that have those annoying popups as it opens in other pages and it is so easy to see exactly what is going on with all the other pages.
Guest skybooks Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 skyfire can manage these files U are joking... These files cannot be downloaded via "normal" browsers?? I thought I had a bad configuration. Why would they not work? I have also tried with some download manager from market, with no result.
Guest k0zmic Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 Try clicking the link and opening in a new tab.
Guest skybooks Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 Skyfire doesnt work for me, it comes up with download error, will try new tab. Am I the only one with this issue?
Guest Fou-lu Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 (edited) Skyfire doesnt work for me, it comes up with download error, will try new tab. Am I the only one with this issue? No, i come across this a couple times, opera mobile always works though, as it uses a diffrent download system, its random and don't depend file size, a 300mb file downloads perfectly of megaupload with stock, while 1mb file at filesonic got .htm, and only worked with opera or boat, or any other, switching browser always seems to work for me, try opera mobile more. only one those type of sites. Thanks for that. As a noob just made the switch from a Nokia 5800, I am finding it such a paradox. On one hand Android is infinitly more advanced than the Symian dinasor, but then I keep hitting hiches where simple things like dowloading a file are so complicated and backward on Android...
Guest Phoenix Silver Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 I have just tried xscope works fine on megaupload
Guest skybooks Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 Ok, I have tried with almost all the browsers but I cannot find any one browser that can download from all sites. Opera can download rapidshare, but cant filesonic - the screen just goes black with the loading animation and it freezes the browser. Stock Browser can do filesonic, but renames to *.htm, but cannot download from rapidshare. I have premium accounts with both sites. Andro browser download option makes no difference. This is really frustrating to me. The OS developed by the kings of the internet is missing such fundamental capabilities. Honestly I was hoping that either a simple solution was available, or that noone else would have this issue and my installation was corrupt. I find it so surreal that users are happy with these limitations, and solutions like "just try with alternate browsers". Obviously I really appreciate all the advice. As a recent convert from Symbian, it is seeming more and more that Android is really cool and gadety, but for the simple functionality this has rather significant letdowns. No, I am not a nokiaboy - hence my attempt to go Android, but I think it is important that people get a chance to see this side of the story. I have personal uses and demands from my phone, so obviously if you never download files from those site and you never use your phone as a camera and you dont use it for music and you dont need to listem to the radio via loudspeaker, this is a very good phone, but for me it has been a real bad choice.
Guest slitz Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 Not many people will admit that Android is pretty bad for productivity purposes, in fact I found Windows Mobile far superior in that aspect. For built in features you're probably better off with Symbian or Windows Mobile; Android is a bit more suited for people that like spamming apps to do everything they want. Android was the closet to Windows Mobile for me, so I transferred to it as a sort of sidegrade but also because WinMo is a dying platform. But if I was interested in the Symbian world I'd most likely get the E7. I can normally download files fine on the CM7 nightlies, which rom are you currently using?

I also enjoy the huge variety of apps that can be downloaded hourly to do all types of cool things, but in the end of the day, if I cannot do the essentials on the phone and I need to use alternative devices fro music/radio/camera/downloading this is rather daft. The main daftness is that I have no doubt that the geniuses at google could sort every one of the software issues out. How hard is it to get a browser that can download? How hard can it be to get radio through the loudspeaker? How hard can it be to have a decent profile manager. I downloaded one last night and the warning message is "dont do ... as this will force the volumes back up, due to Android limitations....". I want to be an Android fan and really like the open source vision, but these issues are real cripplers.
Guest slitz Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 (edited) The camera on this phone is indeed bad, it's best to not use it. I have no idea what you want with the music but I believe people generally like PowerAMP, supports gapless playback and I think it has an equaliser. To download any file type you wish you'll need Download All Files, or at least that's how it worked when I used Japanese Jellyfish RLS 4, not sure if it'll solve your download problem though. You could try CM7, I believe it offers custom profiles but I haven't been out and about to utilise it yet. I am not sure if the FM radio works on that though, the last time I tried it didn't. I don't use the FM radio or listen to music on this phone as I have an MP3 player that has a better battery life than this phone can ever achieve. Edited May 25, 2011 by slitz
Guest Pondlife Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 (edited) Not sure how useful this is as I've not actually used it, but recalled reading recently that if you get Astro file manager one of the options in preferences is related to downloading. Grabbed the app and it says the following but I don't have the data allowance to test if it's helpful for what you are trying to do. "Enable Browser Downloader" "Allow the Web Browser to download any type of file" Is the radio issue more to do with hardware than software, thought it needed headphones to act as aerial, though I guess it could still use them as that and output to speaker, but not seen anything that does. Astro file doesnt help, and yes you need the headphones for aerial, but you run the sound through the speakers. This is really nessecary if you are in a low reception room, so you can put the headphones/antenna in a good reception area and listen via the speakers.

Samsung galaxy sII destroys this phone, many other androids too, this is a £80 device, not everything will be perfect.
Guest skybooks Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 Sure you have got enough memory? :P Sure do  Just had my premium rapidshare premium account suspended, due to 16 ip address trying to download off it. This must have been all these proxy browsers like mini opera and skyfire etc.

After using HTC Sense for a while I just can't bring myself to use vanilla Android again.

Guest slitz Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 Too many versions of Android that all function differently, for example DeviceX may include features which isn't available in the stock Android version. DeviceX's features might have broken some features of another app or introduced some features that other phones did not have, thus causing the app to behave differently for users that did not have DeviceX.
Guest k0zmic Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 I was used to Sense as well but I think Gingerbread is on par with Sense (Aesthetically).
Guest slitz Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 (edited) I wish Gingerbread had the magnify zooming selection though, that is a really great feature of Sense IMO. Accurate selection is one thing I miss about resistive touch screens. Edited May 25, 2011 by slitz
