Guest tabor56 Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 I'm probably going to sell my Blade to get a new phone, was looking at the Desire S, HD, Omnia 7 or Samsung Galaxy S. Not sure whether to go Android or WP7 though....
Guest slitz Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 (edited) WP7 is pretty basic at the moment, wait for Mango to be released or the new handsets then decide if you want it. For now, stick with Android if you like it. The DHD is a great device if you can deal with the size of it, 3.7" makes on-screen typing very good for me, so I can only think of what the DHD's 4.3" screen can bring (positive if you're wondering). I believe the Galaxy S should be graphically more capable than the DHD though, but if you're not going to use it for games then either device will do. Edited May 25, 2011 by slitz
Guest k0zmic Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 Mango's new features have been announced yesterday. Better multitasking, better internet and better tiles mainly plus other refinements.
Guest That-Guy Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 This is something to watch: http://www.theorder.co.uk/simfree/offline/deals/Huawei/U8800 Huawei U8800 :P Paul has just got one and it has already been rooted etc. There will be a section for it on this site soon I believe  He is getting good performance from it too:

Guest That-Guy Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 Is the U8800 going to be available on contract in the UK? Already asked where it is available in the new U8800 forums which Paul has just setup: http://android.modaco.com/content/huawei-u...8800-in-the-uk/ Hope this helps :P
Guest admanirv Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 Paul, When you did the quadrant test, was it overclocked? How is the phone in General, i cant decide between a brand new u8800 for £170 or a almost mint condition HTC Desire HD for £200??? :P Cheers
Guest slitz Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 (edited) The DHD has a better raw processor than the X5 at stock clock, but the same GPU. DHD also has 256 MB more ram (768 MB) than the X5 and a bigger screen. I would go for the DHD myself, but that's me. Edited May 25, 2011 by slitz

Not sure whether to go Android or WP7 though.... Have both. Get a HTC Touch HD2. You can make it dual boot WP7 and Android. They seem to go for about £140 on Ebay. I am seriously tempted do this as it would give me TWO custom ROMs to play with :P
Guest darkado Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 dhd is a beast, but a beast with one very crappy battery

But I guess you pretty much get a WP7 device since it has the same specs as all the WP7 devices currently out. One drawback of the HD2 is the implementation of multi-touch not being fully implemented for Android I think.

Your getting a speed boost, that's it, the resolution is worse, the screen is just bigger. A HTC Sensation or Motorola Atrix is a decent step up though, and the galaxy II is ok if you don't mind the same res screen.
Guest slitz Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 (edited) Definatly not worth it. Your getting a speed boost, that's it, the resolution is worse, the screen is just bigger. A HTC Sensation or Motorola Atrix is a decent step up though, and the galaxy II is ok if you don't mind the same res screen. But a bigger screen resolution means more processing power (i.e. chance to bring overall performance down) and more power comsumption coupled with the dual-core processor. The DHD has the same screen resolution as our OSF (480x800), unless you're talking about DPI. I believe the Sensation and Atrix have a locked bootloader, I have no idea if these have been unlocked by anyone yet. Although Motorola said they'd unlock the bootloaders to their devices later this year. The GS2 has a Super AMOLED+ screen, meaning more vibrant colours (though may look unatural to some people, but it's a blessing to everyone else) and no power consumption when black is displayed but insanely high power consumption for whites so it's pretty bad for web browsing. I haven't used any of these four dual-core phones, so don't take my word for it. :P The four dual-core phones out at the moment all have their pros and cons, and each based on personal opinion. I'm waiting for a dual-core phone with a QWERTY keyboard, they're brilliant for typing/copy paste shortcuts and emulation too IMO. Fingers crossed a 5-row QWERTY slider will come out. Edited May 26, 2011 by slitz
Guest Maringer Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 The Atrix bootloader still hasn't been unlocked or bypassed though people are still working on it and are making progress. The Defy bootloader has been bypassed and a good CM7 port is now available for it which ought to indicate that something similar could be done for the Atrix. I like the design of the Atrix - still very compact despite a larger screen, but the reviews I've seen haven't been over-complimentary about the display. Does the Super AMOLED really have 'insanely high power consumption'? The reviews certainly don't seem to mention this. It will probably be a little worse than a TFT screen but nothing too dreadful. The SGS II also has a pretty big battery 1650mAh, I believe which ought to be decent enough. Also, it should be mentioned that dual-core processors don't necessarily have to be any worse at draining the battery than some single-core processors - it depends on the process technology used to produce the chips - a single core chip produced on 65nm may use more power than a 45nm dual-core. In general, however, you're right that they should have higher battery drain to some extent.
Guest slitz Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 Super AMOLED is known for being a high power consumer when it displays pure white images, the reasons why most interfaces are black on these types of screens is not only to save the battery but also to prevent burn in which is something that happens quicker on any AMOLED screen. I believe it uses less power for other colours though, as long as you're not constantly viewing anything with large amounts of white on the screen then Super AMOLED's power consumption is pretty low. Any TFT screen will use a constant amount of power no matter what colour is displayed, which makes it neutral for browsing websites but has a far lower contrast than Super AMOLED. TFT's drawback is that black will be displayed as a colour whereas black on Super AMOLED will have that segment of the screen off.

Well yes, but 800x480 to 960x540 isn't that great a concern considering its also gone from a 600Mhz to 1.2Ghz*2!, and esp makes the DHD pointless, you loose dpi as well has having poor battery.
Guest slitz Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 (edited) But you do get a step up from the OSF with it, those three other phones are a bit out of the price range though. Edited May 26, 2011 by slitz
