Guest Burns Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 Hi, First apologies, I imagine this gets asked a lot. I have been thinking about possibly picking up a Streak to maybe replace a HTC Desire. The main reason I am interested in it is the big screen. I had a Vega tablet but just found that I didn't use it enough to warrant two devices. So a phone with a big screen would be a ideal device for me. I did look at the Streak around 10-12 months ago but it seem to have a few problems and I think it was then stuck on 1.6. I see that 2.2 has been released so I'm just wondering how the device is nowadays. I see also that it has quite a good custom ROM for it? Can anyone offer an opinion on coming from a HTC device as I'm a big fan of the Desire and HTC sense, would it big difference using the Streak UI? Power-wise are they comparable? I should note that I will only be paying £200 for the Streak. Thanks

Thanks The screen size alone is worth it :P Seriously people condemn the streak for its 5" screen saying that its to small to be a tablet and to big to be a smartphone. Imo with larger hands it is perfect. Plus it is the only real "portable" tablet available without having to carry around a "man bag" £200 is the perfect price, I got mine for £199 @ tesco  Vs the Desire.. Less Developer support (Custom roms) but DJ Steve is a miracle worker. Power wise I would say it is about the same as the desire (Same CPU, GPU etc.) but has much better battery life. If you were using a rom with HTC sense then with a launcher from the market (Recommend ADW to adjust rows and columns. Big screen just as well make the most of it) you will find it much faster. Sense is just visual eye candy that really decreases performance The Streak is an ageing device but currently its the only Table-Phone available <_< Edited May 26, 2011 by Azurren
Guest jmhalder Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 No, and I'll tell you why, the touchscreen digitizer is crappy, only 2 finger input, freezes when unlocking, and "drags" between two seperate quick taps (makes typing and gameplay hard)... otherwise, the size is great, the battery life is good.

The dell streak has a better touch screen than the Nexus one and HTC Desire and the ZTE Blade (And all other devices around the same age) (Talking about the dual touch axis bug, just youtube "HTC Desire or Nexus one Multitouch") I have never experienced the lock screen sticking and I also have no gaming issues :P Newer model? Or perhaps age related
Guest WilhelmsBrick Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 For £199 I couldn't really find a good enough reason to not get the Streak. It has done me really well - as someone who uses the device a lot for reading the web & RSS feeds I find the screen size (like almost every other person who bought it for that reason) to be fantastic. It's just the right size - not too big for a pocket and not too small to be straining or constantly zooming in & out. If you're a kindle user like myself - it's also fantastic for those times when you just need a backlight to keep reading & not be turning the page all the time. I also spend a lot of time watching videos on it too, spending a good amount of time doing 1/2 hour train journeys I find it's great to use apps like rockplayer so I can just dump my avi's on there and catch a movie over a day - and again, touting that screen, the size changes the experience from just bearable on a 3.7inch phone to quite decent. Especially comparing it upwards to the bulk of a tablet/netbook etc. Moving away from the screen - whats better, is that I can do all of the above over a day (at a push day and a half) and the battery wont die. For the size of the phone and in comparison to phones of it's time (and even nowadays - desire HD) I know I can get a lot out of this phone and still have enough juice when I set down at home in the evening. The 1ghz processer is still pretty snappy, I get pretty good framerates on games like dungeon defenders etc, and as I said movies play pretty well. The stock ROM for 2.2 never was actually that bad, but Streakmod really is the business, snappy, responsive fast, and the freedom to get a lot on there (or not). But I must admit, I have a soft-spot for stage ui - I hate the widgets, but just the feel and spacing of it. I love snapping the app tray up with my thumb. Issues I've had across the 2 streaks i've owned (by no means universal, i speak for myself here): Although screen seems pretty responsive 95% of the time, I sometimes out of nowhere on any ROM i've ever had cannot get any touch registered - to the point maybe 1/2 times a month I have to reboot. I have broken the LCD once - the glass was fine, but the LCD cracked right underneath - it feels like it's built a little too tightly and unsturdy in place. Certain (fairly heavy) presses around the bezel and edge of my screen cause 'waves' in the screen. But this is unnoticable day to day - and I have to purposefully do it. Speaker isn't great - but c'mon, it's a phone. The camera - Now I've had some really pleasing results with the camera, in good daylight, with a nice still object to shoot - but any other condition can be real irksome to shoot in, and the flash is useless. Hope this helps!

Even light presses around the middle of the left bezel sends waves through mine.. When in my gel case sometimes just gripping it causes this Actually this concerns me quite a lot.. Hopefully I haven't got a faulty model :P
Guest AndroidClone Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 (edited) 5 inch screen novelty wears off and with todays phones reaching the physical size of the streaks screen, I'd say it doesn't have any advantages over my aging hardware. non super amled screen is the killer. Unlocked SAMSUNG GALAXY S II Anyone? dual core HD display for the win. Don't get me wrong, its been a love hate relationship with my streak, I'm on my second one. But its definitely not a contender anymore. edit: apologies for my fragment sentences here and there. in a rush Edited May 26, 2011 by AndroidClone

It's big enough to be a tablet and small enough to be a phone. I think it strike the best balance :P Got mine when it just came out and spend £400 but never regret a second.

Or perhaps age related I know the N1, G1, and some of the phones of the time, only were designed to support "pinch to zoom" gestures, It wasn't a "bug", it was a hardware limitation. The Streak came out 7 months after the N1 in the US, also it came out after phones like the OG Droid, the SGS line, and those phones had proper 2+ finger multitouch. Even though you haven't had the unlock problem when pulling it out of a pocket, a HUGE number of Streak people have. *this all being said, the Streak isn't worth much anymore, thus you can pick em up on eBay for CHEAP!
