Changing a ROM safely before flashing

I'm currently using CM7, but use a different launcher, want to try a different boot animation, and don't use some of the apps that come with CM as standard. I downloaded the latest ROM, and was wanting to change these things before flashing. Before I flash it, I just want to make sure I haven't done anything that would break it.

I copied the Zeam and Titanium Backup apks from /data/app on my phone, and added them to the rom, renaming them from com.whatever to Zeam and TitaniumBackup.

I deleted the standard launcher, some wallpaper stuff, and theme things from the rom.

I took the "bootanimation folder" that I wanted to use and swapped it with the one already in the rom.

I deleted some ringtones that I don't use. In the build.prop, the default was set to one I deleted, so I changed to to one that was left in.

I merged the system folder from the 20110307 gapps with the one in the rom already.

Are all of these safe to do, or is there anything else I need to do first? If I wanted to add dtapps2sd without flashing separately, could I just merge that straight into the rom?

All those changes seem safe. Just remember to take nandroid backup of your current working system. There is no risk in experimenting with ROMs. Method of trial and error is very good way to learn new things. :D

Darktremor A2SD can be included in ROM, as it is in Swedish Spring. But I'm quite sure that it needs some extra tweaking in scripts. Just adding the files won't do.

Thanks, it seems to have worked okish. The setup thing at the start was a bit funny, gave me two options, then once I'd completed it it restarted then force-closed. Apart from that it seems to be ok. I'll try looking through some more roms and see if I can do it again without that happening.

iff you include gapps you must delete provision.apk from system/app

then it won't happen again :D

Thanks :D, need to go out soon, so will test it later. Still getting the market installer appearing, but hopefully some other changes I made will stop that as well.

That fixed the Setup problem, thanks Psyloid. Anyone know how to stop the Market installer appearing after you log into your google account. The one that appears if you flash gapps after CM7, but not in other roms that have gapps included as standard?

freeze 'market apps installer 1.0' in titantium (or simular)

Thanks for the help, found out how to stop the market apps installer appearing. Deleting Pacman.apk before flashing did the trick.
