Cound any of this be related to some of the WiFi issues?

Princeton University is seeing problems with the DHCP client behavior from many Android devices on Princeton University's wireless networks.

The devices are often ignoring DHCP lease times, continuing to use leased IP addresses after allowing the leases to expire. Sometimes the client also tries to renew the lease after the lease expires, which doesn't make sense. Sometimes the client continues using an IP address from an old expired lease at the same time it uses an IP address from a newly-acquired DHCP lease.

Typical symptom is forever "Obtaining IP address"

It may be. There is a new driver for the Wi-Fi and people have reported improvements though and most people who experience issues have Netgear routers.
