HELP: Can I install a 2.1 rom over a 2.2 (Froyo) rom?

If I have a new Streak already running official 2.2 from Dell out of the box, will I still be able to use all of the elaborate rom flashing instructions to install a 2.1 rom over top of this, even though my current rom is newer? Or will it give me an error such as "your device is already up to date" ?? Does anyone know for sure?

Yes it may seem strange to want to do this, but all Android builds from 2.2 and beyond close all background applications after a few minutes of non-use, this effectively eliminating the ability to multi-task. 2.1 Eclair still leaves everything open until the user chooses to close it, which I prefer.

So, with that out of the way, will the 2.1 flash be possible to do using the same instructions as upgrading from 1.6?
