GPS with POV Mobii 10

I have a POV Mobii 10 with built-in GPS and 3G, I have installed BeeGee's custom ROM but cant get the GPS on even after trying the different (and actually mostly non-related - most of these solutions are for vegas with external gps units) solutions pointed to here.

The GPS option for me is simply greyed out and I cant activate it...

Anyone have any ideas how I could get this back on?

Many thanks in advance for any help!

If you work through the topic you mentioned (which I started) on post #78 you will find a solution which I believe works for internal & external GPS systems by installing the GPS on/off widget and following a sequential startup. It won't un-grey the option in settings but Google Maps etc should then work regardless. If it doesn't work first time reboot and try again. :D

There is a small bug in my ROM, which I try since weeks to solve.

In the settings->location&security->Use GPS satellite the option which is greyed out.

To get it active you have to

Goto settings->wireless&networks->mobile networks and switch off the 3G. Wait until its complete switched off

Once it is off, switch it on again. After that the "Use GPS satellite" option is no longer greyed out and you can tick it.

Anybody with an idea how to get rid of this problem is welcome to help me.

Beside this I had a PM conversation with MindsEye. It looks like he has the same problem that I have with my Viewpad 10s. The GPS is working (I checked with logcat and can see that messages are coming from the GPS), but it never finds a fix. It looks like on some tablets the GPS antenna is s**t or the 3G/GPS module has a problem. :D

I think that gps feature is part of huawei internal data card and maybe if you don't active internal modem (in the settings->wireless&networks->mobile networks and switch on the 3G), the option "Use GPS Satellite" remains grey and you can't tick it.

In other word:

Huawei modem disabled = "Use GPS Satellite" option is grey and you can't tick it

Huawei modem activated = "Use GPS Satellite" option is no longer greyed out and you can tick it

Am i wrong?

General feedback seems to suggest that built-in GPS is not really up to the job so I think external GPS sounds the best way forward for those serious about using the Vega or POV tablets for GPS work. Current prices on eBay are very good and together with the 'Bluetooth GPS Provider' app will provide a sound working system.

For those interested in this particular subject you might wish to check my thread about NavFree which (as the name suggests) is a free navigation system which does not require a data connection as the maps are downloaded to the Vega/POV but please ensure your OS is Froyo not Gingerbread as there are some issues on that version currently.

You are correct, but in the latest version of my ROM (not published yet) I got the 3G active automatically after boot. But the "Use GPS Satellite" is greyed out, even with the 3G enabled. And I did not find a solution yet to get "Use GPS Satellite" active without an off/on cycle of the 3G.

Beegee try the 'GPS On/Off' widget that I've described on my other thread and see if it works for you too ? :D

Yes it works, but what I need is that the "Use GPS satellites" option is accessible after boot, as in my new ROM the 3G is on automatically (like in VegaComb ROM). At the moment you need either to use "GPS On/Off" widget or the 3G off/on cycle to get the option accessible.

I see. Well I'm afraid that's beyond my experience but it sounds like you need to override a setting within Android that decides which order processes are required to be started in order to work. I'd PM Corvus, Newbe5 and Paul on that one see if they any ideas. :D

Edit:- From background research I did a while back it seems there is a bug somewhere within Android which involves the GPS detection routine in that it does not allow sufficient time for the GPS device (be it internal or external) to respond with its status when prompted. If you could put a slight delay in the check routine to give the device enough time to confirm it was there it would probably work fine. Somehow the GPS On/Off widget overcomes this problem and resets the status so other apps will work but the "Use GPS Satellites" remains greyed out.

Probably it's a kernel bug.

Thanks for the tip with the delay. Will contact the geniuses here and ask them for advice. Hope its not a kernel problem as boh mentioned, because then I am stuck :D:o nobody works on Android 2.2 kernels anymore.

After yet more reading it seems for GPS to function correctly it needs to obtain accurate time from the device be it Vega or POV and we all know how poor that is on the built-in clock which is why most of us use the 'ClockSync' app which begs the question on bootup where does Froyo 2.2 get its initial time from? Perhaps inaccurate time keeping is stopping it from being recognised at startup ..... just speculating a theory now but if you want to read what I am here is the other Modaco and XDA threads I've been browsing. Maybe GPS On/Off widget works because it re-syncs time with GPS and by virtue of the fact the system time is by then accurate it works? :D
