Guest thunderdrone Posted June 5, 2011 Report Posted June 5, 2011 I have been using my new Corvus5 ROM for abut two days and have used CPU Master to push up the performance a little. It's not up much, 1200MHz. What I have noticed is that battery performance is nothing like I had expected. I have been running on battery since 08:30 this morning and it's now 12:49. Battery remaining is 28%. My usage pattern has been mostly Internet based, general surfing, a few downloads (Android Market) and an abortive attempt to watch something on iplayer. Can I assume that the minute you move away from the base Advent ROM you can kiss your average battery performance guide goodbye, especially if you are overclocking the processor?

IMHO it depends how you setup the over/underclocking. I use CPU Master now with max 1200MHz and min 456MHz and scaling powersave. I survive 8 hours with 3G on, getting my emails, browsing some time, playing Paradise Island every 15minutes. Performance and battery lifetime of the tablet is acceptable with these settings for me. I do not expect a 10 hours++ between charges as you might get with a s****y iPad or an expensive Galaxy tab.

But these days I just don't feel that I 'own' any of my Apple products. Sure, much as a games console, you can pretty much guarantee the performance because it's a closed system, but I can;t even get to a file system and choose where I want my files to go. Not without iTunes anyway. The tablet market is very new and I am sure we have not seen the best from this emerging merket yet. So I am not ready to spend large amounts of my hard earned cash on a 1st or 2nd gen system. With the Advent Vega I get a tablet with a decent spec that I can play with, MOD according to my preference and not be too worried if I mess it up. I can choose where I want things to go and so feel that the machine is actually mine. I have tried the early BETA of Vegcomb and it was nice but has a way to go - the CORVUS5 ROM just rocks on this machine. And all for half the price of an iPad2. Each to his own, good luck with your iPad2. Edited June 5, 2011 by thunderdrone

Hi beegee1962 Thanks ever so much for the details of how you have overclocked your Vega, it is just what I needed to compare settings. I have been trying 'JuiceDefender' in an attempt to control the battery drain, but may remove it and just try altering the CPU Master settings to match yours. Out of interest, are you using the paid for version or the free (of CPU Master)? I couldn't help notice that you are a 'veteran' on this forum, could you give any advice on how you (or should I say 'If You') convert video for use on your Vega. I am still struggling with lipsync on movie transfers. Thanks in advance.

I use the free version of CPU master, the profiles you get with the paid version might help to save more battery, but I have no need for it at the moment. Guest mxbob Posted June 6, 2011 Report Posted June 6, 2011 i found the corvus5 rom to have exactly the same battery drain as the standard rom i didnt test battery life while overclocking but i cant believe it decreases it by tha much my guess is you need to do a battery stat reset full charge it, reset the battery stats (in clockwork mod) run the battery down completely and recharge it and see if that helps

Thanks very much for the battery suggestion, I will certainly give that a try. I listened to a couple of music tracks this morning while waiting for some video conversions to complete and remain a little worried at how quickly this thing seems to drain. I am trying to get to a point where I can get on a plane for a US trip and know that I can rely on the Vega to run for most of the journey. The thing that seems to really suck the life out of the battery is the WiFi connection, which would not be an issue on a plane. I am also watching for any sign that particular apps are not the problem. Again, thanks for your help.
