Using pulse as a MiFi (wifi hotspot)

Hi, my girlfriends only internet connection atm is a samsung tocco setup as a 3g modem through the usb cable. It works great (better than a 3g dongle), for her birthday I'm going to buy her an advent vega so she can have some big screen android goodies (she only has an x10 mini atm)

So the best thing I think to do would be buy her a mifi and wifi adaptor for her pc, then she can access the net through her 3g sim, to her tablet and computer at the same time. Only thing those items (and the vega) would be a little too much for my budget so...

Could I buy her a cheap second hand pulse mini and set that up with her 3g sim and use that as a portable wifi network, hopefully doing the same job as a MiFi, ideally using the pulse (or other cheap phone) with a usb connection for her computer and wifi access to her tablet, this will save a lot of the costs involved in her present.

Any other suggestions welcome!

1. This is for the tmobile pulse, not the pulse mini

2. Yes there are many wifi tethering apps, I used to use this one http://www.appbrain.com/app/barnacle-wifi-...t.szym.barnacle but I now have the blade which has wifi tethering so I havent been keeping upto date with what is best

you need U8150 with Android stock ROM 2.2, use tether wifi sharing function.

Thank you for the reply richard, I like the sound of the barnacle app, and that would sort her vega out with a connection, but will her pc be able to connect via usb at the same time?

this is because I would not have to buy a wifi dongle for her desktop.

And thank for your reply james kai, but the u8150 is way too expensive to use an adaptor, for that money I can buy a MiFi. You can buy a pulse for around 25 pounds

Any other cheap android phones with wifi/3g around?

BTW she has a pure 3g sim (from a dongle) that wont make any difference would it?

As in wired tethering, no the barnacle wifi app does not support that but im sure if you type in wired tethering android app or something like that you will find what your looking for but my next question is that if she already has a x10 mini why dont you put that on there instead, that way you save some money

but if you want to buy the pulse then you may have to unlock it to make it work with your sim

Already asked her that, but she wants to keep her X10 pro seperate so she can txt/call and she would have to keep exchanging her O2 sim for the 3G one, had a look at some other apps, but nothing concrete as to using the wifi and usb tether at the same time.

Only other thing I can think of is using an old bluetooth dongle I have to create the connection from the pc to vega (whilst the pc is connected to the net via her old tocco) ? It would be slower but should be enough to facebook and things whilst she is in bed. Only downside is that I've tried to do it on my blade but its usless I dont even think CM has any decent bluetooth support (girlfriend is on CM with her X10 pro)

Thanks for taking an interest.

For anyone who is wondering on the problems raised in this thread, I have come to a decent solution. All I needed was a cheap WiFi adaptor that supports Ad-hoc mode (around 7 pounds) and a program called "Connectify-Beta 3.0"

After installing the program my girlfriend can use her 3g modem normally via USB and Connectify makes a WiFi hotspot with the adaptor to share the connection. Happy days!
