Tried replacing my digitizer now touch screen wont work

I dropped my phone and cracked it pretty bad so I bought one of the £24 replacements from ebay. It came and I followed the guide to install it but the touch screen didn't work. I looked inside and one of the spongy things has broken off. So I put my cracked screen back and it worked but the light sensor wasn't working. So I took it back out and put it back in and now I can't get the touch pad thing to work again! It looks as though all of the contacts are touching but I'm not sure how they are supposed to go! I have tried rearranging multiple times but no luck! Have I broken my original digitizer or actually screwed something up on my phone?

Ritchstorm : I cracked my digitizer screen too on my Dell XCD35 / ZTE Blade. Where were u able to get a replacement for this on ebay ?

Still can't get mine to work though, any ideas?! I can't get into recovery mode either to try and wipe my phone. When I hold VOL- it comes up with a black screen that says "Android" in tiny writing upside down on it. It then goes back to the green man, then back to the writing over and over. And when I hold VOL+ it just stays on green man forever :S
