Any DEV's out there fancy work on a Gingerbread ROM? Maybe an AOSP build? anyone?

What's involved in porting a version of Gingerbread to this phone, anyone got a clue where to start? I'd be eager to learn....

HCDRJacob would be able to sort a build out no problems im sure but sadly he doesn't have this phone ;)

Unfortunately this is the problem we have at the moment, not enough people have this device!

It looks like Huawei have an Android 2.3 device called the C8800 with a 480x800 screen resolution. So possibly a Gingerbread version of the U8800. They published the following C8800 UA-Profile specification back in February and it definitely lists Android 2.3 as the operating system.

I haven't seen any sign of the C8800 firmware yet but it might be worth keeping a lookout for it.
