I have recently started using the all you can eat data from 3 for tethering at home via my blade, when i visit certain site e.g proxy sites, it redirect me to a site from 3 asking if i am connecting over wifi and says

'You need to be connected to Three's mobile network to access Planet 3. You may need to disconnect your Wi-Fi and reconnect it to the Three network to do this'

just wondering if anyone experienced this and any way to get round this, because i'm not sure if its the network or settings on my blade, currently using ss rls5. Thanks.

P.S i am able to access those sites from my phone, but not from my laptop...

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "proxy sites." Do you mean http proxies like anonymizer.com ?

One thing I've found is that some sites are blocked if you use the standard APN. Try changing the APN from three.co.uk to 3internet in your mobile connection settings and see if you still get problems.

Cheers, using 3internet instead of three.co.uk works a treat.

Hi can you tell me a bit more about this and how to set it up etc. I am guessing this is so you can use the net on your phone and also access the net from say your laptop ? If it is that plz plz tell me how i do that as i will be in the uk for a week this friday and i have a 3 sim this could be just what i need.

Thanks

The way you change your APN depends on which version of Android you're running. On CyanogenMod 7 which is based on Android 2.3 I did the following:

Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile networks -> Access Point Names

This originally showed a couple of entries both called "3 UK". I don't know why 2. One was already selected.

If you click on one of them you'll see a list of properties and values. Change the value of the second property, called APN, from "three.co.uk" to "3internet". This bypasses Three's NAT and, in my experience, provides a smoother internet service.

NAT, Network Address Translation, is a method used by Three to redirect attempts to access porn sites, etc, to their own expensive porn subscription systems. I expect it may have other, more legitimate uses, but overall it's just annoying.
