Moving to USA - Advice Please

Hi,

I have been a fan of this site and its advice since I had my T-Mobile Pulse. I put a few custom ROMs onto it, upgraded to the San Francisco on strong recommendation and have been continuing following this site for advice and ROMs since.

Now I am moving to the USA and I realise that my Blade may not be up to the task any more. Because of coverage where I will be, I will be pushed towards the AT&T network and the San Francisco unfortunately isn't quad band so can't communicate well with AT&T. Also the data frequencies are different so even with other providers, it's unlikely that I'd get 3G.

Does anyone know of a good value for money Android phone that will support the AT&T telephone and data frequencies?

Thanks for the advice.

James

Moving to the USA?

Simple answer - don't go!

1001 reasons not to immerse yourself in their delusions & their "culture"!

Life is about choices & you only live once: why waste part of your (limited) time in such a country?

Hmm... more after phone advice than life advice really.

True, many reasons not to go but also many reasons to go. I won't know unless I try it so I'm going for a year and then we'll see...

Apologies that my reply considered unhepful to your query - I recognise what you're saying; simply feel life is about more than phones!

In the US, you'd have to go for one of the Optimus 1 spin offs for the same sorta value, but then you'd don't get the WVGA, probably the best thing about the blade. So, you'd have to look up market, and it's where the American carriers get you. They are a lot more involved than the UK (or many European) networks. So I guess you'd probably have to get a contract for 2 years or so to get a decent amount of internets, etc. So I'd say try and pick up a top quality Quad-band phone that will last you your year in America, and will serve you if you were to come back, or continue to be good if you stay out there.

Will they give him a phone on a contract though? Fairly sure the networks are reluctant at best to do that here.

you will get 2 G I think,

USA is a great country(been there 7 years dude, texas, OK, FL, CA,...) with great people but their government is destroying their freedom.

so if you see something you hate there , it s not the USA, it s the government. USA is a free country for every body but the white jerks from europe stole the country and closed their boundaries and now reject everybody who want come into USA and make it good.

at the end, they got all the criminals and drug dealers who will punish them. even god is against them (tornado, hurricane,...)

have a good time there.

I have a UK friend living over there who took his SF with him (unlocked). He uses it on T-mobile US pay as you do, which works fine 1900mhz 2G. The 3G on T-mobile is 1700mhz and not supported. AT&T is also 1900mhz 2G, but also 1900mhz for 3G, which the SF doesn't support either.

They both have EDGE which gives around 200kbps on 2G, and my mate mostly uses WiFi. He is quite happy. The lack of 850mhz does not affect coverage where he is (colorado). Where in the US would you be?? The 850mhz is needed in congested areas and in the southern areas (NM, TX, south AZ etc).

Enjoy the US - the UK could learn a lot (local democracy, voting chief of police etc); but also the US could learn more from the UK - swings and roundabouts. Generally the weather is more predictable for the month than here!!

Hi,

Thanks for all the advice. The areas I will be are:

1) Dallas TX

2) Rural TN between Memphis & Nashville

3) Interstates between the two above points.

I'll be using AT&T through Straight Talk - pre-pay $45 per month for unlimited talk / text / data or $30 per month for 1000/1000/30Mb (the data could run out really fast but if I don't have 3G then this could be the better option).

I think I'll take my OSF, see how I get on with 1900 and just live without 3G. Ultimately I'll have Wifi at home and at work, and if I find out that I need 3G or the 850 band then I'll just buy a handset out there.

My the way, is there any truth in the above message that upgrading to Gen2 allows the OSF to use 850Mhz?

Thanks guys,

James
