Guest aylesby Posted June 11, 2011 Report Posted June 11, 2011 I am backpacking in Malaysia and hHng Kong this July. Orange has explained their charges if I use my canary contracy and I need something much cheaper to text the UK and use data. Internet cafes may be the only place to go. Has anyone experienced this problem or know a solution.

Network Unlock the phone an use a Sim card from Malaysia or Hong Kong. will make data usage cheaper, maybe you can find an international sim which will make the calls and texts cheaper
Guest slitz Posted June 11, 2011 Report Posted June 11, 2011 Get a new sim card in that country instead.

Guest yogayogi Posted June 11, 2011 Report Posted June 11, 2011 WONDERFUL country, have a great time. I used : www.maxis.com.my, there are also others, google. As others said, ALWAYS buy a local SIM card to put in your phone. Especially in Asia / Africa, the locals pay MUCH less than we do for calls & data. Also, anyone phoning you from home doesn't cost YOU incoming roaming.
Guest aylesby Posted June 12, 2011 Report Posted June 12, 2011 Good information from you all. Thank you. My route must be debrand from Orange and buy a local SIM and bundle. Any one used data from a local SIM for facebook updates
Guest slitz Posted June 12, 2011 Report Posted June 12, 2011 Try China Mobile for Hong Kong, I believe it's unlimited data for 30 days if you top up a certain amount at 256k speed but it's not bad for a quick email check. Ringing the UK is peanuts too.
Guest BRabbit Posted June 13, 2011 Report Posted June 13, 2011 (edited) Digi (Telenor) in Malaysia is pretty good, I think for prepaid (PAYG) data is around MYR8 (UKP1.80), you can buy a starter pack almost anywhere - www.digi.com.my Edited June 13, 2011 by BRabbit
