Guest dwilden Posted June 12, 2011 Report Posted June 12, 2011 Hi, I have just bought an Orange San Francisco (ZTE Blade) in the UK and have successfully rooted it, debranded it and installed Android v2.2 following the excellent instructions on sanfranciscoandroid.co.uk. I thought everything was working Ok until I realised that I never see a "3G" icon at the top of the screen, only a "G" icon. I am currently connecting to the Orange network until I use up the credit they made me buy with the phone. I have looked at the Settings on the phone. Under "Wireless & Network settings...Mobile Networks..GSM/UMTS Options", the entry "Use only 2G networks" is ticked but greyed out. Under "Access Point Names" an entry called Orange UK is checked, but I can't see the settings as they are hidden by asterisks. I read one posting that said to make sure I had a 3G SIM - but I can't find how to check this anywhere. I presume this means that I am not connecting to a 3G network - does this mean that I won't be getting full speed downloads, and if so can anyone tell me how to change the setting to get access to 3G on this phone? Any help would be much appreciated, as I am a complete Android beginner Thanks Dave
Guest lurcio Posted June 12, 2011 Report Posted June 12, 2011 (edited) Only just got OSF myself but had exactly this problem when using a Three sim. The answer was simple in the end: >Get APN Backup & Restore from the Market >run the App and delete APNs >Settinge >Wireless & Networks >Mobile Networks >GSM? /UMTS Options >Access Point Names >Menu button (Hard Button) >New APN >Name = Orange > APN = orangeinternet. That should be it but if you want to change network a list of APNs are here http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...work-providers/ Lurcio Edited June 12, 2011 by lurcio

Guest dwilden Posted June 12, 2011 Report Posted June 12, 2011 I just spoke with a technical guy from Orange and he said that there was no way that the phone configuration would stop it working with 3G if it was OK with GPRS and it had to be a network problem. He then checked and said that the explanation was that the two nearest masts to my house both had reported faults which were due to be fixed in the next few days. I took the phone for a drive a few miles away and I have now seen the 3G symbol, so I'm happier that the phone config is OK after all. What I have noticed though is that it always shows "G" when its idling in data transfer terms, but shows "3G" when there is a more significant data demand., then goes back to "G" afterwards. Is this normal? Dave
Guest lurcio Posted June 12, 2011 Report Posted June 12, 2011 When I changed to a Three sim, I had 2 APN's for 3 network neither of which I had put on there and I was unable to edit or delete them. The APN I had before upgrading the rom was not there. Good your solution was easier, but if you want to change to Three... Well you never know. Good luck. Lurcio
Guest dwilden Posted June 12, 2011 Report Posted June 12, 2011 Thanks, I've already got a Giffgaff SIM ready to put in as soon as my Orange credit/download is used up. Dave
