OK,

Ive spent 4 days on this and cannot take anymore!!!

My wife and I have Orange san francisco's.

Hers will download from the android store without the slightest problem.

Mine refuses to play.

Ive checked the settings on both phones - they are identical in every way.

If we are on wifi (same network, hers works mine doesnt.)

Mine lets me browse the store and downloads say they are starting, but just sit there as downloading permanently.

Ive looked everywhere on the web and tried everything - hard reset, changing to gmail.com instead of googlemail.com, opened up router ports, clearing cache, well everything. Like I say, my wifes phone is identical and works with the exact same settings no problems at all.

Im totally at a loss as to what is going on with this phone. It surfs the internet no problem, everything works fine, just no android store downloads.

ANY help appreciated as Im totally at a loss!

Cheers

Andy ;)

All those words and hardly any info, what rom, what gen, has it always done this, suspect it's a small cache issue.

Sorry, its the stock orange rom (version 2.1.1?), has been rooted and orange items removed.

Its Gen 1 model. It didnt do this out of the box - originally it was fine. It just started doing it once "de-branded".

I removed the exact same things (orange wednesdays, orange accounts page, orange homepage, etc) from my wifes phone and hers still works fine. Ive tried multiple full resets of the phone and, as mentioned above, opened wi-fi router ports, cleared cache, changed to gmail.com email address, infact, anything I could find to try, Ive tried! as I say, I think we can forget it being a wi-fi issue as my wifes phone works perfect on the same router.

The issue is that I can go on the net, go to the android store, everything infact, and the phone is fine. Its just when I try to download applications (free ones) - it says "starting download" and just stays there permanently. Ive seen a lot of this issue mentioned on the web but no-one ever seems to find a definitive fix.

Im really at a loss, having tried everything after searching the web high and low!!

So, as mentioned previously, Id really appreciate any help you can offer.

Regards and thank you for looking,

Andy

Someone else had this problem. Try waiting with the starting download for 5 minutes while going on your browser and surfing.

Or use another internet source

Hope that helps

I think he means try another connection e.g. over 3G or another Wi-Fi network.

Have you cleared cache/data for all of the Google apps e.g. Talk, Mail, Download Manager, Market, Market Updater?

If this still does not work I'd backup apps and user data with MyBackup Root/Titanium etc, install Clockworkmod and then just flash a 2.2/2.3 ROM.

ah, now that's sounds a lot weirder than if it was a custom rom which I thought it might have been. Barely spent any time on the original rom tbh, not sure many here have.

Could try backing up your data and doing a tpt of the original rom if you are set on running the stock rom. http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...-2011-oled-tft/

Would need to start thinning it out again though.

Given that the market is so integral to Android I'd be tempted to take it back.

Did it work before you took the orange stuff off btw?

I'd definitely have a go with the changing the google password from that linked thread as a first attempt, that's pretty painless and worth a go at least.

Something I found elsewhere on googling the problem.

I've been told that the problem is related to the DNS suffix of your email address.

i.e. it has to be xxxxx@Gmail not @googlemail

Seems a bit odd, but equally worth a thought as it's pretty easy seemed to work for a few people on the thread

Hi all,thanks for the comments.

I tried the password change but no difference.

I already changed to gmail, but no joy.

Tried clearing cache, doing a full reset- infact Ive done that 6 times now!

Everything works perfect, just the apps say starting download but never change from that.

Of course theres also the issue that most of the stuff to try and fix this is in the android store and I cant download them!

Oh, also this problem is identical on both wifi and 3g.

Any further ideas appreciated, as im lost.

thanks again,

Andy

I really don't know now TBH.

I think you're best of flashing a custom ROM which will most likely solve the problem and make your phone a bit nippier.

Can updates to market be installed on unrooted phones? I'm guessing not but just a thought.

Still thinking that trying the tpt of stock might be worth a go at this point.

It's hit and miss, the OP is rooted though.

Hi Andy, I am sorry if this has been suggested before, but can you go to the Market Place on a PC and download apps that way? I know this is not a solution, but just want to try and narrow down your problem. It should push the apps automatically to your phone, just amke sure the phone has an internet connection, and leave the Market App running too.

I am very wary about deleting apps, simply because other apps and services may be dependant on those app or services. Especially with a custom ROM such as the one by Orange.

I know what will definitely work, Flashing "Swedish Spring RLS5" it is more modern than the stock Orange ROM, and a billion times better. Because if need be you can always get the stock Orange ROM from this site Flash that and start again.

I know you did the exact same thing with your wife's phone, but it has been a few days now and you are still stuck.

You need an app called "ROM Manager" installed, if you haven't. You can down load it from this site the old fashioned way, I am assuming you have an SD card installed, so if push comes to shove you can re-flash the stock ROM and start again, or better still, install (Flash) Swedish Spring RLS5, then you will see what a crappy butcher job Orange did originally.

Anil.

PS. Report back first before you decide to Flash anything other than the stock Orange ROM, there are a few house keeping things that need to be be done, easy but essential.

Hi Anil,

Thanks for your comments!

I did try downloading Apps on my PC and they get sent to the phone fine - however, then its exactly the same problem......"starting download" and nothing else happens!

Guess my only option is to install a new, debranded rom.

Any recommendations for which one? Id like something with reliable wi-fi / 3g but otherwise if its stable, Id be happy!

Also, how do I do this when I cant get hold of the apps I need from the store? Yes, the phone is rooted and unlocked, but thats all - where do I go from there?

Oh and finally - I cant find ROM manager on this site? Ive searched but it aint here!! I can find it on google, but it keeps sending me to the store to download!! AAARGGHHH!!!

Again, help appeciated as this phone is ageing me!!

Thanks to all

Andy ;)

Hi Andy,

Phoenix Silver has kindly provided links to ROM Manager and the Swedish Spring ROM. Put both on your SD card, then launch the app called "Filer" and navigate to ROM Manager on your SD card, it should prompt you to install the app, proceed.

There's a video on YouTube which covers the basics of ROM Manager. Well worth 15 mins of your life.

Important things to remember:

Once you have ROM Manager installed, when in recovery mode (Which feels a bit like the BIOS on a PC),

  1. Make sure your battery has a good charge, 100% is safest. But don't have the phone plugged into anything.
  2. Select Factory Reset.
  3. Wipe the Cache.
  4. Go to Advanced and Wipe The Dalvik Cache
  5. Your first boot after a flash takes a little bit longer than normal. So no need to worry. Just be patient and leave the phone alone.

I am sure you will have a few more questions before you start, and it may seem a bit daunting, but once you've done it, 1. Your phone will be much better. 2. You'll realise it is actually very simple and straight forward.

Anil.

I'd also go into mounts and storage in Recovery > Format System

Just to make sure it's extra clean.

You fellas are totally brilliant.

Im going to try this tonight.

Just one question - could I back up the rom on my wifes phone and install it on mine?

It gives me an option if swedish spring doesnt do it for me!!!

I will post back tonight to let you know how I get on!

Thanks again, I sincerely appreciate your taking time to help,

Andy

You could, but there would be things that conflict like MAC addresses so it would likely cause problems with your Wi-Fi if you both try access it.

Also, a few apps rely on IMEI which could cause a few issues too.

It's best to just wipe (again) and install a stock from scratch.

Hi Andy,

to backup your wife's ROM you would need ROM Manager installed on her handset, then you can backup her ROM to the SD card. After which you could install that ROM on your phone, but some of your wife's settings would come over too.

Swedish Spring is ANDROID version 2.2 (AKA Froyo) the stock ROM is ANDROID 2.1, there is a significant difference in the ROM's in terms of performance. They look very similar, so no huge surprises. I won't bore you with details, but they have an impact on the handset and your user experience. Ultimately we're all different and the stock Orange ROM may suit your needs.

Either way, getting ROM Manager on your handset is key, from there it is easy peasy.

Anil.

Not conveniently, it causes problems.

The link I gave on page one goes to a thread with a very close to originally supplied rom and a method for installing it, might actually be identical to original. You could flash that to get back to Eclair. (and the start stripping the shite out ;) )

I'd say forget about rom manager and just use a TPT rom, can put that on by just copying the file to sd card.

Below is a quote from StevenHarperUK, a person who has written many guides on this forum, and made some very instructive video's.

"The Total Phone Transfer System, does not require you to have Clockwork installed - it does however make much more fundimental changes to your device.

TPT is really for more experienced users - you can only install using the TPT method if the ROM has been specially packed for it."

The above quote is from the link below;

How To Install A Custom ROM

After flashing, ROM manager is invaluable in making complete back ups of your phones ROM. The premium version allows for scheduled back ups, I have my phone set to back uo every two days at 4am. These backups have saved my ass a few times, whilst I was learning about ANDROID.

Have fun.

Yeah but as with most of his stuff that's really dated (January in this case, when as it says further down it was new), I'm not convinced he'd agree with it now. It's a really really easy way to change the phone, especially for getting to gen2 which many and I'd probably even guess most have done on here.

And importantly in this case doesn't need any downloads from the market and there's a tpt to get his phone back to almost stock.

I'd go for gen 2 and CM7 if changing from stock too ;)
