Home and Back Buttons

I've just come back from PC World to look at tablets. A friend suggested I look at the Vega because the ROMs and support that are available here make it an attractive purchae compared to the tablets twice the price. The Vega looked no worse or better than the other tablets although I wasn't hugely impressed with the screen quality.

One thing I noticed that I'd not seen mentioned before here or in a number of reviews is that the hardware doesn't have a back and home button. I would have thought these were fairly fundamental to the operation of an android device and although I;ve searched here I can;t find any mention of this.

So, does not having those hardware buttons restrict the functionality of Vegacomb on this device? With the installed software on the shop device I found a couple of applications that hid the top menu bar making it quite difficult to work out how to get get back to the main screen. Is the menu bar always there in vegacomb or is it easy to get round not having those buttons.

Sorry if this is a stupid question and one that's been asked before.

Thanks,

jon.

There is a back button on the top along with the rotation switch and the power button. The power button can be remapped on most roms using the spare parts app. So that when you tap power it returns to home, if you then press it again it puts the device to sleep. I somehow fluked this to work on Vegacomb but lots of people seem to have problems with this. I think this was because I had it working on a previous version and did an upgrade of the rom instead of a fresh install.

You can also install button saviour from the market which puts an expandable menu on the side of the screen for using back, home and menu etc.

hi john

******edit*********

curse shameful, beaten to the draw :P

vegacomb rom keeps the soft back and home buttons always available in the status bar along the bottom, but the top right hard button on the vega is a dedicated back button anyway if you want to press something physical and shiny ;) .

also there are apps available , button savior is great, that keep a semi hidden so its not intrusive set of control buttons always on the screen.

However that aside the screen is no good for anything other than single user viewing so dont buy it because its cheap then expect a 500 pound screen.

so read the forum its all here including the bit about buttons and screens and is it any good etc etc and make an informed decision based on what you want it for , it is a great bit of kit but i only use it for fun, recreational browsing and games and movies at work :D

Thanks guys, that is helpful.

I understand about the screen, that came across the wrong way from me. I use iPads in work quite a lot at the moment and it's hard not to draw comparisons. I know this won't be as high quality and it is only a handy device for me to do the usual stuff, general browsing, email, social networking and movies/games/music. I'm almost sold I was just surprised when I went to look at one today and noticed the missing buttons. I went into the installed camera app and struggled to get out of it which worried me a bit but you've put my mind at rest. if I didn;t have those buttons on my phone it'd be near impossible to use but the button app you've described above sounds like it fixes most things.

Thanks again, it probably won't be long before I've stopped dithering and gone and bought one.
